Default 2012 LS 460 side mirror

Came out to find my drivers mirror had been ran into by someone walking by and now the mirror won't retract. You can hear the gear moving, but the housing doesn't move. The mirror works just fine, just the folding action is not working. Before I remove the door panel to remove the mirror assy, can you replace the gear inside or do you have to replace the entire assy? Dealership said that it had to be be replaced as a unit, $1,125 to fix. I have found used mirrors for $285 and wanted to know if I can pull the mechanism out of the used one to fix mine? Thanks

Most of the mirrors are designed to be forced out of position in either direction. And most of the time you just have to move it forward or aft, with your hand, until it snaps back into engagement with the gears.

Sorry for the long delay. After buying a used mirror off eBay that was having the same problem that my original mirror was having I found the guy on eBay that was selling just motors and replaced it. Works great, only other expense that I had to spend was $120 at Lexus to reintialize the mirrors as one would turn in and the other would turn out.

Thanks everyone

This happened on my wifeys mercedes except that she ran into another car but whatever, same principle.

What I did was close the mirrors, the functioning one will close while the non functioning one stays open. Snap the non functioning one into the close position and then press the button to open the mirrors again. Worked first time for me but sometimes it takes a few tries.
