i would do the 0w-20 or 5w-20 mobil 1 extended performance not the regular mobil 1

or the toyota fully synthetic at dealer, the toyota motor oil is great

I'm already at 170k on mine. 0w-20 seems to burn too much oil - 1qt per 750 miles. 5w-30 is what I use at it seems to only burn 1qt every 1,250 or so.________________

Once I hit 150,000 miles I started burning oil....when I hit 170,000? Didn't matter what I put in it...could've been molasses, I was still burning a quart every 1,000

I tried 5w30, different brands, different intervals...but my thinking was, so what, it's not the end of the world, it can probably go another 170,000 like that. But then my brake actuator went (out of warranty). It changes things when you need $4,000 of work and you're burning oil. Lol

What oil and viscosity did you mostly run during the first 150k and what was your oil change interval?

Doublebase and I had the exact same experiences and bemoaned our consumption over the years. Changing to a 5W30 from 0W20 made zero difference in the consumption. As he said, I could have put 60W300 in and I doubt it would have made a difference.

That said, I believe TGMO to be a fine oil and all my Blackstone Labs reports agreed. My local Toyota dealer used to sell it to me in bulk. I would just bring in empty jugs and they fill them up. My cost was less than buying Mobil 1 or whatever from Wally World.

This is concerning. Did your engine always consume oil or only after a certain mileage? Any idea if it was the rings or valve seals that failed?

It was concerning at first, especially as I was coming from a BMW 7 Series that belched massive quantities of blue smoke after idling for a minute or two. This after only 30k miles on the odo. Fortunately with the LS, that wasn't the case, and a compression test showed all was well. So where was it going?? Who knows? It certainly had no leaks and consumption only showed at the 2 or 3k mile mark of the OCI and then increased from then on until the oil was changed again. Weird, but true. Not just my experience either. There are threads about this issue. As I've said before, even CR has done reports about brand new cars burning up to a quart of oil between changes as soon as they leave the factory floor (Subaru, etc). There is much speculation that this phenomenon is somehow associated with DI engines.

Old thread!

Have any of the guys burning oil at high mileage tried Liqui-moly Cera Tec (or other additive) to correct some of the issue? I know this will likely start a raging debate about snake oil, but I've used it with some success (some not) in high mileage cars, usually European, to cure consumption and smoke.

The conclusion on the oil debate should be to ensure it's changed at regular intervals with a quality synthetic. You're more likely to get people to agree on politics than oil type. "I've used X brand of oil for 80k miles with success". Success = My engine has not yet grenaded.

The OP is fine with 0w40 because of the year-round hot climate. Those with seasons should stick closer to the recommended viscosity.

Absolutely superior product which is test proven and lives up to its claims. Yeah, I thought the same thing many years ago before I drank the Kool-aid. I've been using it for decades in all my vehicles, and ALL of their liquid products throughout the entire system. I'm so far from the MLM Pyramid Scheme it's hilarious. Do as you will, but until technical data proves otherwise, I'll stick w my Kool-aid. LOL.

My issue with Amsoil has always been the "zealotry", I tend to avoid products that people claim are "the best in the world" and "amazing game changers". At the end of the day, it's oil. How do you tell if one oil is excellent and the other is extraordinary.

I'm sure Amsoil is good oil, alongside many other good oils.

My concern with Amsoil, Redline or any other similar boutique motor or gear oil product is that quite often the manufacturer will not pay to have their products certifed to meet API, ACEA or manufacturer required performance specifications. The boutique manufacturers usually will "claim" their product meets or exceeds a range of specifications, and that could be true. Then again, it might not be true since the performance levels were not certified by the certifying authority lab.

Recently I've switched all my vehicles over to Mobil 1 Extended Protection. In the Ls460, I'm running that oil in a 0W-20. For my next oil change I'm going to switch to 5w-30 Mobil 1 Extended Protection since there are many reports of oil consumption by 150k miles or so and an oil with a higher HTHS will offer a bit more protection. 5W-30 is also listed as an acceptable grade for this engine in other global markets, just not in the US.
