Problem with the "paddle shifters", as implemented on all Lexus vehicles except the LF-A and the IS-F is that they are just gear limiters. Downshift prevents the transmission going into a higher gear than selected and upshift prevents the transmission shifting into a lower gear than selected. It's not a sequential manual - just a pretty worthless marketing gimmick.

Paddal shifters connected to a slush box is for those who don't know what an actual sequential brings to the table. It's like that Simpsons Baby with her own steering wheel pretending to drive.
A real sequential has a manual gear box that is terribly unreliable but fun to drive.

Jeff, the original OP, hasn't posted here in a while. My guess is he never ended up doing this.
I agree with you guys, doing this on an auto transmission doesn't do a whole lot more than the auto will do on its own. I never checked it on my car, but the power mode probably shifts at revs almost as high as you could do manually without redlining. And there's no rev matching on downshifts.
