LS460 Paint Thickness
Hello all, I am looking at a 2011 LS460 and metered the paint. the hood as been painted came in at 8.5 mils. the finders where 6.5 mils. The finders looked like original paint, is 6.5 mils the correct paint reading for original paint on the finders?

The hood had been painted 100%, the orange peel was slightly different than rest of the car (one of the best jobs I have seen, took me 30min to notice it). The 6.5 mils was on the horizontal part of the finder next to the hood.

New BMWs have very thin paint. they are <80 microns in many areas. Lots of orange peel.
At least for the upper portions of the car, there should be almost no orange peel provided that the clear coat is well corrected. Lexus does a great job, especially the LS.

of course. but if the body shop does it's own wet sanding then it's a good body shop. .

I always used to notice orange peel but have much more since I had the work done on the LS, and it's funny you mention BMW, because I've noticed

New Production Processes Ensure Highest-ever Quality
Lexus developed a build process specifically for the new LS line at its award-winning assembly plant in Tahara, Japan. With remarkable levels of fit, finish, and refinement – achieved through the combined skill, knowledge, and pride of Lexus master craftsmen (called "takumi") and advanced technology – the LS models exemplify "world's best."
For example, the painting process was thoroughly changed from the previous-generation LS. During the application of alternating layers of paint and coatings, each L is hand-sanded twice in key areas. This process smoothes and refines the painted surfaces and enhances the deep, mirror-like quality of the finish. New six-axis buffing robots with three-dimensional movements were built so that curved surfaces and ends can be polished as well.
