I just looked in my manual and it states 5W-20 or 0W-20 is the recommended oil for the 460. It does not say that it's inherently required so if you want you can go ahead and use 0W-30 and your warranty should* not be void.



*In the Warranty and Services Guide (I'm assuming this is the fine print of the warranty) it also uses the word recommended. It also says "Lexus will not deny a warranty claim solely because you do not have records to show that you maintained your vehicle. However, damage or failures caused by lack of proper maintenance are not covered under warranty." As vague as I think that sounds, take it as you may.

Things will most likely never get to this point. But if they do, do what you have to do. The Act does also allow the settlement to include any legal fees you incurred.


Either way, it's up to each individual to decide what to do. There's enough information in this thread for someone to make an informed decision.

I have no idea why the service rep told me my car specifically takes 5w30. As for my location, it's Memphis, TN. We get pretty brutal summers and winters are generally mild with occasional snow. I'll have to question this with the dealership.

I'm an idiot. Too many 12 hour night shifts and overtime have clouded my brain.

I apologize..... I mentioned 0W30 (instead of 5W20). Obviously the manual and cap both state "5W20 and 0W20" as the required oil viscosity's. Again, I apologize. I adjusted my earlier posts to reflect this.

However, I still stand by the opinion that, if you use just any old oil outside of Lexus' requirements for the specs of their engines, that you will have a tough time getting a warranty honoured. Here is the excerpt from the Lexus manual:

" Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in your Lexus vehicle. Use Lexus
approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following
grade and viscosity.
Oil grade: ILSAC multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20

As it says, "to satisfy the following grade and viscosity....." ( and states 5w20 or 0w20).

15w40, 10w30 etc do not "satisfy" the viscosity.

So to be very clear here guys: If my car is under a CPO warranty and I choose to change my own oil, ( receipts provided) will my warranty still be honored by Lexus? Do you guys change your own oil if your car is still under warranty??

When I bought my '11 CPO LS460, I was told by the sales manager to just keep the receipts for oil and filter purchases and the engine would be covered under the CPO warranty.

As Jud149 stated, keep all receipts. I've always done my own service and never had a warranty denied.

Just as Chris says, the manual specifies 0W-20 or 5W-20. Manual page 560:

So, either the lady in service misread the 5W-20 for 5W-30 or something isn't quite right.

Roadfrog- I never worked the 3-12's. My last 2 years I worked inside the office on the 4-10 plan. What an experience that was! I missed the road and the OT. Now 10-10.

If in doubt, get it in writing. If they use 5W-30 (which shouldn't be a problem) but you're weary of your warranty being void, get it in writing. Call Lexus/Toyota Corporate to get clarification and if they do say that it doesn't void your warranty, have them also put it in writing just in case. I do firmly believe you shouldn't have any issues, but it doesn't hurt to have it written down and signed by someone higher up.
