Normally when I fill my fuel tank, of course the car is off/not running. And once it is full and I get I'm the car then start it, the "Crusing Range" read out has always read about 403mi.
Right after the recall was done, it read about 420mi. if I recall correctly, but in the next fill up or two, it's remained at 403/404mi.
However, today when I filled up and got in the car, the cruising range read 387mi.
Why would that be?
The tank was between 1/4 and 1/2 full before fill up...
Any ideas...

 

It adjusts per your driving, so if you are getting worse MPG right now it will calculate less range at next fill up.

FWIW I am happy to see it say anything over 300 miles, as its usually about 290.

My last fill up said 460!

 

There's two different MPG calculations available. 1) the last tankful, resets every time you fuel up 2) average mpg, which you can reset manually by pressing reset on your steering wheel when av. mpg is displayed. If it's never been reset, it's your lifetime average.
This doesn't necessarily answer your question but points to the likelihood of your range changing because it's based on the last tankful mpg which will vary every tankful.
I also noticed that the range value will decrease quicker in city driving and decrease slower with highway driving. A handy tool.

 

Mine always says 501 sometimes 511 but it's almost always over 500.
I routinely get about 460 to 480 a tank depending on how how harsh I drive in the city.

I hadn't been driving the car much but over the last month I've been driving it a lot more and have recently been a little more aggressive with the car (just enjoying it!).
I'm not on the highway much at all so the car never really gets to "stretch/air out" so to speak.

I believe the car constantly assesses your mileage based on how you are driving. So the range can change if conditions warrant you using more or less gasoline to go a given distance. For instance if you fill up and immediately drive on a highway at normal speeds, your range will be high because the car is assuming you will drive like that for the whole tank. If you suddenly turn off the highway and get stuck in stop and go traffic, it will start reducing your range since now it is basing it on current higher gasoline consumption per mile.

This is more noticeable with a full tank. As you pile up more mileage, it adjusts less because you are adding your current mileage to a greater data base of existing mileage per galon. I hope that last sentence makes sense. I know what I mean but I'm not sure if I explained it well.

 

Mine routinely starts out at 420-430 after a fill, but on a long highway trip it will add 100 miles by the time the tank is down to 1/4. The Wife's car (AWD) surprised me by going just over 500 miles on a tank before refill. I like how Lexus range calculations are conservative, vs. our Yukon Denali that scares the crap out of you by suddenly dropping range rapidly in the last 125 miles.

 

Mine is always 520-560. If it's something in the settings, I'm not changing it. Makes me feel good to see it that high.

Wow thanks for the info. I was wondering why on long trips after a fill up I get 499 and when driving around town and filling up I get 483. thanks

 

My initial cruising range after filling up is around 420 miles and the total of miles since the last fill-up + (remaining) cruising range has never exceeded 440 miles. Even with all freeway driving at 70mph max, I typically get in the low to mid-20's mpg. All I can think of is that the people getting 500 miles of total range must drive in flat areas, with little or no elevation changes.

Pressing the gas pedal for even slight inclines has a big impact on mpg.
