The dirty little secret is that European car manufactures hire Japanese consultants to help innovate their production lines.
Japaneses advisors saved Porsche from bankruptcy in the late 90s. The Europeans have been good at perpetuating the class/lineage myth to those that think they are less deserving and not worthy. Changing one's status though your car purchase is what they sell. This is the vary same mindset that invented fake sophistication that you get from Starbucks.

 

I edited it in realizing that it was a 2007, versus a 2010. That being said, getting a 2010 SWB for around $20,000 and with under 100,000 is fairly easy on Autotrader or Cars.com

 

Would have to do some research, however, pretty good price here...
Interior not in the greatest condition, and of course wipe away all that grease! lol

2010 has the improved 6th generation navigation system.

 

That's a lot of miles for a '10 and the price isn't a bargain. Find one with a lot less miles that you can enjoy driving and racking up the miles, instead of the previous owners. Definitely a no.

 

You have to remember he is looking at a LWB. You can find deals on SWB all day in that price range with lower miles. The LWB market is much more limited and is also a more expensive car to start with. I am not really phased by cars with higher miles as long as the maintenance has been spotless, but I would look around some more.

 

I am not afraid of the car, but agree with the others the price needs to be under $20k to be appealing.

 

I wouldn't do it, think about how many miles that is. Yeah if YOU were the one who drove all those miles it'd be different, but it was someone else. Sure the car can most likely easily go way beyond that - in terms of mileage - and yes if you owned the car you wouldn't consider that mileage high, or beyond reliable, but it was someone else. Who knows how they drove or if they took care of it. And the price? Twenty grand? When you can spend two thousand more and get a car with half the miles?? Is the guy that's selling it insane?

 

I have owned more lexuses than I can count.. probably 20+.
The last lexus I sold was a 2008 ls 600hl, with 65000 miles for $38000, 2 years ago.
I have one more of an identical ar left and it has been trouble free - at about 50k miles I think it has.

In hind sight, I am not sure whether I should have traded the first one in.. One reason I sold it is - Lexus repairs are expensive. There is talk elsewhere on this forum that they are needing front suspension work - probably $4000 - except that someone else posted a cheaper way to do it.

another reason is - the front seats were beginning to show wear. The lexus dealer tried to get the leather repaired but it was still showing. Leather seat repair is only for dealers to show and sell the car.
A car with 170k miles would probably have worn out seats.

About 3 years ago, a friend of mine bought a 2007 Ls460 with 97k miles for $29k+tax. It seems to run great, without trouble. Maybe has 135k miles on it now


Typically, lexus needs front suspension work.. I have heard that needed on a few cars, which I kept beyond 60 k miles.

One 1990 model LS 400, I used for 240,000 miles.. Engine and transmission were perfect but it needed a lot of repairs/maintenance..

The water pump... is expensive.. I am not sure what the story on the timing belt is, on the current gen cars.. Prior gen needed it every 60k miles, I think.

The chances are - the engine and transmission might last to 300k miles or more.. But I would discourage you to buy a car with 170k miles.

Most often, third party extended warranties are a scam! Maybe some exceptions but most of them are scam!

I would not pay $20k for 2010 ls 460 with 170 miles. I might consider it for $10 k, max! - that to if I had a friend for a mechanic!

I would be concerned about buying ANY high end luxury car, without factory extended warranty.

Not sure if you're referring to current gen LS'. If so, they are cheap. I replaced mine with a brand new one off Ebay for 55 bucks which I replaced in my driveway in a couple of hours, which included replacing the rad(my fault for breaking a nipple on it) and a couple of hoses. The water pump even came with a lifetime warranty.

 

Getting a 2010 with less than 100K miles under the conditions you specify depends on what you mean by "around $20,000" and "fairly easily". I'd expect a car with lots of problems or accidents and/or a salvage title, LOL.

Admittedly, I haven't looked at the market for a while, so I guess anything's possible.

 

The miles are too high.

Let's not get caught in the "I bought it so it's the best" mindset. If you want state of the art, cutting edge, and flat out unbelievable performance: the S550, 750li, and A8L offer blistering 0-60 times below 4.8 seconds. The A8 can achieve 36mpg (say it's a typo). Let's not begin to discuss the AMG performance. Whereas the F sport is about badges and brakes. However, Lexus offers unequal reliability when compared to the top three luxury marques. The high mileage LS is a good buy at $15-16K. Have it checked by a tech and drive it with confidence. I would buy an LS with those miles before the S550, 750li, and A8L.
