Default VCS and VCRS lights both came on a once, $8000 repair bill

My VCS and VCRS lights have both came on a once. My dealer says I need a whole new Rack and Pinion system/ "harness". Cost $8000.00, Steering wheel is at 2 o/clock when vehicle is straight other than that there are no other problems. Anybody experience this or know of a less painful cure? (2007 LS460 with 91Kms) Will a reset of the steering wheel solve the problem?

oh I wish..
however I now need to confess that here in Australia the steering wheel is on the other side so the usual US sourced spare parts wont work!

So at the moment I am faced with $7500 for the part here in Australia or $4000 in New Zealand or I can get it direct from Japan for $2900.

The problem I have is that I am not confident in the diagnosis and would love feedback from other people who may have had this issue. Is it real or is it a sensor anomaly?

It angers me we get seriously ripped off out here with Lexus pricing - I was was in NY at Manhattan Lexus two weeks ago, 2015 LS460 AWD F sport with everything, $US90k roughly, that car here in Australia is around $US197k.. Okay import duties and tax you may say and there is a degree of truth in that but in New Zealand (where I have my RX350) the LS is special order only and over $US200k and there are NO import duties on that car in that country at all!

Disclosure - currently on my 10th Lexus.... have been very happy (obviously) - until now....

Loyaltolex, before even reading your second post I was thinking the same - did they do the proper diagnosis on your car?. Is there any other Lexus or even Toyota dealership near by you?. Before coming to conclusion, its better to get a second opinion. Even with in a dealership, no two technicians are same in caliber - like any other profession. Might want to check and ask for experienced/certified technician.

Is there any engine code (CEL code)?.

Alas this is all I know about the fault (this is from the initial diagnostics report that the dealer did, resulting in the $8000 quote ...

Well better news so far.

The second (official Lexus) dealer gave me a coffee and whisked the car away to the service bay. (As they do...) Smiling young service assistant lady comes back 15 minutes later, I take a deep breath and wait for the news ...

She says :
" They have hooked up the diagnostic computer, cleared the fault and give the car a clean bill of health, all for no charge. They have never seen the problem before and asked me to bring the car back if it happens again."

Now that is the best news I have had all week...

I have now driven it back home and so far so good ....

Congrats - indeed a good news to you.

However, I am confused over your original post where you said "Steering wheel is at 2 o/clock ". Is your steering wheel continued to be at 2 o'clock position until you took the car to the 2nd dealer?. Besides clearing the code, did they do anything?.

Did they give you the engine code?.

They took the car away and did not say what they did - thus no "engine codes"
