My gas cap if I recal does not click at all. If it does, then its one light/faint click and at that point, it can no longer be tightened.
My cap does not continuously click upon repeated turning cycles, as it does not continue to turn.
As stated, my cap actually comes to a point where it is tight, it stops, and no longer turns.
However, is there a reason you are assuming the CEL is related to your gas cap, as that may not be the reason for the CEL.

One click.

"When replacing the fuel tank cap, turn it until a clicking sound is heard."

2011, and one click. And yes a gas cap is a very common cause of check engine light.

One click and that's it on mine also. I do click it a few more times out of habit though.

I was surprised, though, that new Fords (a friends rental) don't have a gas cap at all..

All those "one click" answers reminded me of Sean Connery in the movie Hunt for Red October, "one ping Vasily and one ping only".

Yep, if you get more than one click either your gas cap is broken or you have a third-party gas cap. Love the one click -- so much more refined than the ones that click continuously.

Agree with humor!
I remember the first time I got gas after I purchased the car, when I went to place the cap on the fuel outlet and twist the cap shut, it abruptly stopped and clicked once, and to me, kind of softly, not that loud, continuous clicking you can hear from about three pump bays away!
I thought to myself..."Man...these guys thought of EVERYTHING!"

If the gas cap is OEM it should have a black plastic tether on it and say "Tighten one click". Check the black vinyl seal on the gas cap for deterioration.
