First scheduled maintenance @ 5k or 10k (2016)
My first scheduled maintenance according to the car is @ 10k, but my owner's manual says 5k.
Which one is it? I tend to listen to the car itself, but after reading the service guide, it clearly has listings every 5k. The first one (5k) seems fairly benign with only checks and tire rotation. The car maintenance minder shows 10k.
I'm confused.

Well at 5k miles it's not a bad idea to open the hood and check the fluids...coolant, oil level, washer fluid, brake fluid. And it's not a bad point to rotate the tires either.

When an engine is breaking in it is always smart to change the oil at least twice in 5 to 10 thousand miles. Personally, I change the oil once at about 1k miles and then again around 5k miles. After that every 5 to 8 thousand depending on the vehicle. This is because of the high amounts of metal content in the oil when an engine is breaking in. Metal in oil is abrasive and causes additional wear. If you search those who have done oil analysis there is plenty of documentation showing this. This has nothing to do with the oils viscosity or quality.

Yeah, the first service listed in the book doesn't say oil change. I'll paraphrase what is says:
1. Inspect all fluids.
2. Program custom settings
3. Reset schedule maintenance minder (this is strange because the maintenance minder in my car says 10k miles).
4. Rotate tires.
5. Inspect wiper blades
6. Check driver's floor mat
7. Road test
"If driven under certain special operating conditions, you should also replace the engine oil with 0W-20 oil and replace the oil filer. See page 44..."
Page 44 says: driving on dirt roads; repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32 F; extensive idling and/or low-speed driving for long distances such as police or taxi or towing.
None of that applies to me, so I'll wait until 10k to change the oil I guess, but do I really need to go in at 5k if all they're doing is rotating the tires, which I really don't care about because I hate those tires and want them off my vehicle anyways?

Yeah, I guess I'll just call and ask. Still only at 982 miles, but just thinking ahead.
It also said, 5,000 miles OR six months, whichever comes first and at this point I'm not sure what will come first since I've owned it for a month and a half.
Just strange the car computer is ticking down from 10k miles, now roughly 9k miles to go according to the wrench symbol.

Just do some research on the net. 10k OCI's are not so bad but not on the 1st or 2nd oil change. You want fresh oil in there after a couple thousand miles.

The 5k is free so why not go in? Not rotating the tires every 5k miles will shorten tire life dramatically, this car is hard enough on tires as it is.
As for changing the oil, Lexus recommends every 10k with synthetic so that's what I do. There have been plenty of oil analysis posted around CL showing very little deterioration or contamination of the oil after 10k even on the first oil change so I personally would just wait on that until 10k, but if changing it at 5k makes you feel better go for it.
Following the manufacturers recommended service schedule is never "a stupid thing to do" as was expressed above.
