All you have to do is go to Lexus.com and option it all the way up, that's what I did to get to the price I posted.
Even if your dad did spend what you say he spent, the vast majority of people do not spend that much for an ES. It's a solidly mid 40s car, just because one person has to tick every box and special order...it's like saying "the LS460 is just not worth $105,000". It doesn't really cost $105,000...it can...if you want it to.
Perhaps your dad could have gotten a GS for that money, he would have gotten one with less options, and half the fuel mileage (which clearly mattered to him). Having had a GS And an ES I can see why someone would pay more for a fully loaded ES vs a lowly optioned GS.

We are actually in agreement on the vast majority (seemingly all) of the threads that I have come across. It truly was not about money with him and God love him he drove a 6 speed V6 Accord Coupe for around 5 years after he had many problems with his last Audi (had owned a number of Carrera 4's as well, but he did not like them in the snow) as he is a physician and got tired of borrowing my stepmother's RX's (has owned every generation) when the snows came and he was needed at the hospital.
My stepmother implored him to buy any car he wanted when he purchased the Accord, but he went through some sort of anti fancy car phase.
He recently turned 70 and a few years ago, stopped caring about cars the way he used to. When I was a kid, it was always German automobiles and I learned to drive on his Audi 5000 CS Turbo Quattro.

If he was willing to pay more than something was worth and wanted a hybrid, should have gotten a GS450h lol

Tell it! It was the Bamboo trim and the leather stitched dash trim that briefly struck his fancy. What he is really ticked about is that the MPG is not nearly as good as the thought it was going to be. Hopefully the Tesla will be more to his liking.

Respectfully, IMO, you're overlooking what Junglequac actually said and making mountains out of molehills. Here's what he said in part:
"For reasons I will never agree or understand, my father purchased a maxed out ES300h that cost in excess of $50,000 before TTL in spite of both myself and my older brother imploring him not to. While the ES is a solid car, when spending around $60,000 out the door, it pains me to even contemplate doing so."
The price of a fully loaded 2017 ES300h I "built" was $51,720. So, when Junglequac said that his father paid in excess of $50K before TTL, that seems spot-on. (We don't know if his dad also purchased various dealer-installed options that dealers' finance managers are notorious for pushing.) Add on 7% tax and you get another $3,620, bringing the total to $55,340. After adding license fees and perhaps local tax, the total would come to a little over $55,400. Again, that doesn't include all those finance department shenanigans, which could easily add $1K or $2K to the price.
I really don't think Junglequac was exaggerating much when he said "spending around $60,000 out the door". For me, it doesn't really matter; after buying my LS460 used, I'm unlikely ever to buy a new car again.

The implication is that the car is too expensive is my issue with it, and it's really not.
