Quick question...'08 LS460. I change the oil every 5,000 miles...basically right when she starts telling me to do so. Do I need to worry about synthetic vs. regular oil?
I ask because my Lexus dealer, where I normally have the oil changed, is 1.5 hours away. Can't get there anytime soon, so I'm going to use the local Toyota store that's 10 minutes away. I normally pay around $80 for an oil change at Lexus, looks like this one will cost me $60 at Toyota. I'm not so sure at $80 my Lexus dealer is using synthetic oil (and yes, I have a note over to them to ask).
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Brian

Right- I will ask the dealer, but was just looking for whether synthetic is a requirement or not.
I asked the service scheduler and she had no idea. So she tried to get me to a service advisor, who wasn't available.
Sigh.

07 through 09 cars used regular oil at 5000 mile intervals - that's what your dealer uses unless you specify different. 2010-on use synthetic oil with 10,000 mile oil change intervals. Toyota/Lexus, they're the same. Lexus charge more than Toyota for the same service (but you don't get the cookies, danish, designer coffee or loaner cars with Toyota).

Recommended viscosity: SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20
SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 engine oil may be used. However, SAE 0W- 20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather.

I'm not the original owner, so thanks for the information! I'll speak with the service department at my Lexus dealer.

I took mine to the local Toyota shop and asked for full synthetic. The service advisor told me that the oil filler cap indicated that mine could use either full synth or blend, per the cap. For the little difference, I went with the better oil.

I've noticed whenever I take our RX300 in to the local Toyota dealer for its 5000 mile oil change they use "synthetic blend" rather than pure dino oil. At first this bothered me some but I figure the car is 18 years old and has 190,000 miles on the clock, so it's probably not going to make much difference.
