Default How to Remove Drip Rails?

I'm trying to decide if I should have my delaminating drip rails painted or just replaced.

Depends on if I can just remove them and bring them to the paint shop.

Any tutorials out there?

Thanks.

Hi Randy,

Same thing is happening to my drip rails. I bought some carbon fiber wraps from eBay and will wrap the rails when it arrives. I've already removed the drip rails from my car using these tools. I started from the back. I will post the finished product after the carbon fiber wrap is installed on the drip rails.

Thanks, but I'm looking for the removal procedure. I'm having mine colour matched painted - when I get them off!

Any help?

ksersoze,
Good to hear! How many clips did you break? Did you pry up starting on the glass side or the body side?

Almost sounds like you have some experience on this.

Don't be coy lad, give it up!

Hi guys, I came across this thread in the 3LS forum that might help since drip rails on all these cars are probably installed the same way. The funny thing is the two CLers who said they fixed their drip rails provide conflicting info, one says no clips while the other says there are clips. But you may be able to get more info out of them since they are both quite active on that forum.

Another suggestion would be to visit a PDR or collision repair shop. I am positive they will know how to remove them. Hopefully, they will be friendly enough to give you some directions. Good luck!

I pried out the drip rail from the body side starting from the back of the car. I did break most of the clips, but I ordered them from this website https://partsouq.com/. I ordered 10 of the clips (they're about $2+ per clip). This is an international website but carries most of the oem parts. It's the cheapest I've found anywhere even though shipping is about $10. The package arrived within 3 days of my placing the order. Also, the clip at the front of the drip drail is different. And it's different for both right and left side. My suggestion is order that part as well. Here is the picture with the parts list.

I've circled the clips. 75562 are normal clips. I think there are 9 or 10 of them. The other circled ones are ones on the front of the drip rails.

After paint tape removed and glue cleaned.

Had the same issue w 2010 GS350. Lexus wanted $1200 to repaint them. Stopped at Carsmetics. He said he’d repaint them for $300 but no warranty. They’re stainless steel and he couldn’t warranty how long the paint would last in the hot Florida sun. His body shop person came out and peeled off the remaining tape (I had tried but it was tearing off in pieces) all in one piece. I think being 95 degrees out helped. When I tried in my garage, it just tore. He then used a lacquer thinner, very lightly, to remove the glue residue. I gave him a $20 tip and left them unpainted. They look fine

It looks good. i have the same issue. Did you take the rails off, or were you able to do it with them still on the car?

I left the rails on. When you start peeling it will break and you will need to tease the edges up to continue pulling. Try to lead with the removal in such a way as to first peel up the edges that wrap the rails. Just take your time.

I found a product call Never Dull. $6 at Walmart and is meant for chrome surfaces. Took the adhesive left behind right off.

Has anyone tried using a heat gun or blow dryer to soften the adhesive and make the removal easier?

Just use that Never Dull product I mentioned in the previous post. It comes off with that.
