Default Fuel consumption?

sup everyone name is mike, just bought a cpo 13’ fsport been on it about a week now and been trying to figure out why i get such horrible gas mileage. Been on eco mode all week and most of my driving is highway miles and I only get 16mpg average. I assumed that it would be atleast 19mpg with my granny driving( got people passing me for accelerating super slow ). My second time filling up and im at 1/2 tank. All tires set at around 30-34psi. Anything to look out for? Thanks
mike

that sounds pretty low highway MPG,
my 2009 LS460 gets ~23 mpg on highway after transmission fluid drain & fill.
before that it was around 21 mpg.

Try resetting the mpg display right before you get on the highway and see if it changes.

Verify the old fashioned way by using the same pump at the same station for multiple fill ups while tracking gallons in and distance traveled.

Or you can use the Fuelly app to track mpg. I use this for app about a year when I first get a vehicle just as a check on actual gas mileage.

I have 6 fill-ups on my recently purchased 07 LS460 with 26.7 mpg. Granted this has been mainly interstate driving at 75-80 mpg. Best tank was 28.3. Worst 25.4.

As an fyi, my wife's ES300h averages 36.4.

Not on vehicle, but on your phone. I have it on my iPhone. At each fill up you enter odometer reading, price per gallon, and number of gallons. Results are calculated and tracked on the app after initial fill up.
You can also see the results and compare to others as well.

I'd expect 16-17mpg from mixed city/highway driving from your car.

Have had my 2010 ls since 8/16

most of my driving is in town or freeways to appointments. Most of the mpg is around 14-16 because it is stop and go then a few miles on freeway.

When end I do get a chance to go long drives, my mpg shoots up to 21-24 if on a mixed road tank of fuel. If I fill up before road trip, mileage is 26-28 depending on road conditions and weather.

I believe I am getting what has been the manufacturer mileage.

I use Shell premium all the time.

Hope this his helps in your investigation.

Best,

Cubby

I average 26.5 - 27 mpg per week. My long term average is 26.5. My commute in mostly highway and country back roads. I have 165,000 miles on the car, it's an 07 and I now only run regular fuel (haven't noticed much of a difference). I run 36 psi in the tires...honestly the car is getting me better gas mileage than my wife is getting out of her Honda.

Beautiful LS, Mike. Black exterior is starting to grow on me. Are you calculating 16 MPG on your own, by hand, or are you taking the computer's word for it? Our 2013 is consistently optimistic of by .5-.8 MPG, so I track it on Fuelly.com instead. In the 7 or 8 months we've had the car, I'm averaging 16.9 MPG based on 80% City/20% Hwy driving. If you're seeing less than me and you're mostly highway driving then something is off. Is your air filter dirty and clogged or are you somehow disengaging overdrive (which seems doubtful if you're always running in ECO). Yours is an F-Sport so maybe you're in manual mode and not paddle-shifting to the highest gear (just a guess)? Is your highway driving predominantly uphill or into a headwind? Or are you carrying a lot of weight in the car? Is yours AWD (I can't remember if F-Sports are AWD by default), but AWD does have lower fuel economy in City and HWY. What are your RPMs and what speed are you going on the highway? At 65-70 MPH, I'm averaging 26-28 MPG (on the display) and RPMs are 1700 or so. Hopefully we get to the bottom of your fuel economy woes.

Welcome, Mike

I too picked up a '13 black on black a couple of weeks ago, non-fsport and in AWD. I commute probably 20 miles round trip if that from my home to the office but I sit in bumper to bumper traffic during that time which isn't fun and given the colder weather here in Chicago lately I average at best about 15.9 mpg. I'm driving on one of those "mini-highways" where it's not stop light to stop light but it's not quite like a 4 lane highway either.

I recently inflated my tires up to 38 PSI all the way around, since our temps dropped from 65 down to 40 in the matter of a day so my TPMS went off since the full size spare dropped down to 27PSI.

I would definitely check the tire pressure as a first and maybe as others have said, venture out to the gas station you frequent to and fill up a few times and calculate the old fashioned way. Enjoy the vehicle.

Welcome Mike.

Not sure your F sport is AWD or not. That makes difference too. Even for an AWD 16mpg is low. How is your idling?

I am not sure where you fill gas. Not two fuel are same. I suggest below steps;
  • Try premium for next few fills preferably from top tire gas companies (Exxon, Chevron, Valero, Shell etc)
  • Try fuel injector cleaner such as Techron. But Techon is not an aggressive formula, you may not see improvement immediately
  • Else, try bit more aggressive ones such as Seafoam or BG44K
  • Personally I would go with fuel injector service with BG machine. Cost around $150.

Thanks for all the input. My car indeed is awd, ill have to check the filter when i get home today. I use the odo display and its averaging 16.3 highest i got after refueling. I just downloaded the fuelly app and will input everything at next fill up which should be fairly soon. I just put more air in all the tires to 36psi as well. Most of my driving is highway about 11miles to and from work. Im located in upstate ny and most of the gas station out here are either speedy/delta sonic or fast track but i use speedy all the time.
Thanks,
mike

Even in cold upstate NY weather, you should be getting better than that. I live in NC and had a 20 mile commute (mostly freeway) and was averaging 24+ mpg in my 2007. Since I retired, I'm doing more in-town driving and long distance (500 mile) trips to see the grandkids. Still averaging about the same (25-26mpg) in the 2014.
