Need advice! Lexus service way overpriced?
2010 LS460 base model
Hello everyone my dad recently dropped off my car at Lexus for an oil change and they stated I needed 2 new rear struts as they were “leaking”. They quoted me $1770.00 for the struts installed and $180.00 for an alignment. The struts cost about $450-$500 for the pair (Non-air). Is a labor charge of approx. $1300 sound right to you? I feel like the service adviser tried to take advantage of my dad who’s a senior citizen and knows very little about cars. Thoughts?

its a scam, they should be arrested actually for the rip offs they do daily.
You can buy brand new KYB struts , which is the same manufacturer as the OEM, for like $100 each.
Installation wouldn't be much more then $100-$150 each corner
Also if the struts are still driving okay then don't even bother with it

dealerships should only be used for warranty work. they are typically 3x-4x higher than a regular shop when it comes to basic repairs and maintenance. a local CA dealer quoted me well over $1500 for a brake job on my RCF citing my pads were lower than recommended.
had the pads checked at the mechanic I use for my other vehicles, and they are at 6mm down from 9mm new, and lowest recommended is 2mm I believe.. and my mechanic quoted the brake job at $650; $300 for pads plus labor

I would take it to an independent shop for sure. Dealership is really expensive...

Here is my advice: Grab a set of "basic tools" along with a floor jack for less than $300 then buy your own parts from Lexus or any after market parts supplier (like rocky auto) and do these types of repairs yourself with the help of this forum....... This will save you some money!
The internet is full of places to buy parts, tools and gather plenty of "how to" information on “COMMON" repairs...... There are plenty of jobs that are NOT a DIY job but changing the struts is a fairly easy job to do.

Joining the conversation late, but if you're not a do it yourselfer, there has to be a shop nearby that specializes in Toyota products. I know there are several here in the area that do. Do some online research including feedback from customers and you should save some money.

Sadly $1770 is in the ballpark for what they would charge, it's what I was told as well. Unless you have a warranty covering the repair, go to an Indy. Sadly the only things reasonably priced at dealers are fluid changes and sometimes tires. Actual repairs cost an arm and a leg. The only reason mine keeps going to the dealer is simply because the warranty will cover repairs, otherwise I'd be going to a local Indy.

Sadly, it is the same story over and over on how the dealership prices are so high over independent shops. For those with DIY skills/tools/time it is even more attractive to do these repairs. When a car is new and under factory or CPO warranties the dealership is the correct (and only) choice but once the money is coming out of your pocket best to find a reliable independent shop (which requires research and references).

I paid about 1500 dollars for 4 shocks and ALL my control arms replaced including labor and wheel alignment. So obviously your Dad can save a ton pf money at a local shop.
