So I ordered a credit card key, I'm told it won't be compatible with my car, but I don't really see why not, I know people have set them up on RX's etc that they aren't supposed to be compatible for. I have 30 days to return it if it doesn't work.
Anybody have any experience activating a credit card key on a 13-17?
The key I bought off eBay is a remanufactured but virgin (i.e. never registered to a vehicle) key with an FCC ID of HYQ14ABB. The seller says it will work for 2008-2015 LS460s, my key is the same FCC ID as my 15 LS so if it works on a 15 LS it should work for a 17 LS.
HOWEVER, I don't think it actually will work. My key's FCC ID is HYQ14ACX, and based on what I have found online this ID is shared with the CT, the Prius and several other Toyota models that people have successfully registered Lexus credit card keys for, but those keys they successfully registered are FCC ID HYQ14AEB. I can purchase that key marketed for the CT, and if it programs up with a CT (which I have confirmed the OEM keys have the same HYQ14ACX ID as my keys) it should program with mine.
Both keys have a 30 day return policy, going to buy both and see which works. The CT key is new so its about $90 more expensive.
Even the second one won't be the same, they don't make a card key in the HYQ14ACX ID, but from everything I have read that seems to be definitely compatible.
I'm a little behind the times I guess. So, the 17's do not come with a card key? That wouldn't just kill me, but I prefer to have one.
I like the card key, but would live without card key withdrawal, if I had to use fobs. There are times when a fob is preferred. I took a bidness trip with 3 colleagues (4 passengers), and there were several times when they would get to the car before me. But then they would have to stand there like a dog waiting for his owner to open the door. With a fob (which I have but didn't bring) I could have unlocked the doors from a ways back, so they could get straight in and not have to wait on me.

AFAIK the only LS's that ever actually came with the card key were the LS600hLs. The previous owner of yours must have bought it as a part and added it. They changed the OEM FCC ID on the LS in what looks like 2010, and they don't have a direct replacement card key any longer. Now, from what I have read online that does not mean it won't work. People with Priuses and Tacomas have used the Lexus card key with my OEM original key FCC ID...
There is card key information in my manual, and it says, "if equipped." So it seems maybe 2010's came with the card key, maybe as an option, or depending the list of packages, or VIN code. I have a GL1EF, and I think most LS's are GL5EFs. I'm not certain as to what was required for these to be "equipped." But interesting...
Yep mine is a 2010 and it shows the same thing in the manual. But the dealer tech came out after about 20 minutes of trying to program it and said the did some research and it was not supported on my car. I left it at that and returned it to an ebay seller.
The "if equipped" is the key (excuse the pun), I'm 99% sure the only model that came with it was the 600. If you go back through the forum you'll see back when they came out people were discussing adding the wallet key, etc.

You are correct; not even the Executive Package seemed to include the card key. Now, I do wonder if it was a different story outside the U.S. - hence the language about "if equipped".
I talked to a Lexus dealer that was referenced in forums as being supportive and helpful about this. According to them the 14AEB card key should be compatible with the 14ACX fobs I already have.
Undortunately thats bot not the key I have coming LOL. Will return that and buy this key.
I have the 14ACX keyfob and purchased the 14AEB and went to the dealer to get it programmed and no dice. Although it may be true that it can be programmed if the dealer says it cant be programmed I would not attempt to do it myself or have a locksmith do it for fear of a total cluster and unable to use any keyfob.
