There's a timer once you shut the car off that the lights will stay on. The default is 30 seconds after shutting the car off, but the setting goes to a max of 60 seconds I believe. So after you lock the doors it could take up to 60 seconds for them to turn off. If for some reason they don't turn off, their could be something else going on.

My 2011 can have a delay of 0, 30, 60, or 90 seconds, depending on how you set it up. I left it at the default 30 seconds.

I had a similar issue with my 2008 LS. What I learned is that the headlight only turns off after the driver opens and then the shut-off timer begins. If the driver door never opens then the headlight will not shut off. For me, the issue turned out to be the door open-close switch was sticking and the car did not detect the door opening/closing. The rubber boot on top of the switch needed to be greased. Once greased the switch started working properly and my headlight issue went away. Hope this helps.

These cars are equipped with a headlight auto-off feature that extinguishes the headlights automatically after a customizable delay, 0-30-60-90 seconds, that begins after the ignition is turned off and at least one door is opened followed by all doors and trunk closed. A common cause of problems with this feature has been defective doorjamb switches.

I guess I'm old fashioned. I used Techstream to turn off all the automatic features - auto light shut-off, auto steering wheel re-tracking and repositioning, auto door unlock when the shift is in P position, auto door lock when the shift leaves Parking position, auto re-tracking of sun sheds, auto mirror folding, auto daylight lighting on (in SoCal it's always sunny), etc. I just want to be the driver of my car and turn on or off a car function as I need.

I agree with your "auto-assessment."

I'd like to turn off the steering wheel auto-return function...I don't need it and see no point in having the motors whirring every time I get in or out of the car. I guess I'd have to look into Techstream for that, but it seems like a lot of money just to turn off one feature.

Techstream makes it easier to DIY. For example, for transmission drain and fill, instead of jumping cables and shifting the gears in certain patterns, Teachstream gives the exact transmission temperature and time to unscrew the transmission overflow plug for making sure that the transmission fluid is filled to the right level. Teachstream can also be used to program car keys and add or remove tire pressure monitoring sensors (TPMS). Its most useful function for a DIYer is perhaps to do the "dreadful" brake fluid bleeding procedure correctly.

Hmm, I do have an old laptop hanging around, so maybe I'll get the cable and software. Is there any specific cable you guys recommend? Or software vendor? I can search some of this later when I have more time.

Carista is also another good inexpensive option as an alternative to Techstream. You also have the bonus of it being super portable and compatible with many other brands.

The subject of this thread is the Headlights Auto Off feature.

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would want to turn that off. What would be the advantage in disabling it? And, I'm not sure it can be disabled.
