Oil Consumption Poll
I'm not sure this has been done before. I'm interested to see what members are experiencing with oil consumption. In my case, I've always had SOME consumption, but of late, I've been consuming far more than the usual. I just had my oil changed at 4000 miles. In that OCI, my LS consumed 5 liters of oil (synthetic TGMO 0W20). I got a good deal at my local Toyota dealer for an oil change, where I expressed my concerns about the oil consumption. They replaced the oil with dino 5W30 and will be conducting a "oil consumption test". They found no leaks, and said to return in 2k kms (1200 miles) and they'll monitor. FWIW, there is NO blue smoke ever, neither at start up nor under heavy acceleration or after long idle, (unlike my previous 7 series BMW). The car otherwise performs perfectly......smooth, quiet, etc.
At the end of the day, the results of these tests will not change anything. There is no way I'll pay for any engine work (valve guides, seals etc). With 203k kms, I just wouldn't bother since the car runs so well. I'd just change to a heavier weight dino oil and add as required. Eventually, I'll be trading it in anyways (maybe sooner than later). FWIW, Toyota/Lexus state that a qt every 1k miles is "normal". In browsing the web, Audi, Subaru, and many other cars are experiencing similar issues. Consumer Reports has done an article about it.
Sooooo.........please cut and paste the following with your results:

current mileage: 121,800
Oil Brand and viscosity: Mobil 1 0W-20
rate of consumption in your OCI: negligible
In fact just recently was the first time I ever had to add a quart between changes and only because I went way over the mileage. I go 5000 between changes and never had to add oil.
BTW Chris, you didn't respond to your own poll!

Well it's funny you mention oil consumption, I'm experiencing it too right now.
I'm chalking it up as "winter driving". I do use more oil in the winter/cold weather.
Right now I'm at 4,000 miles on my oil change interval and I've added two quarts of oil (the most I've ever used at that mileage). Im using Mobil 1 0w20. I've read Mobil 1 has some oil usuage issues, can't say if I agree or not.
One thing I'd definitely look into is the breather tubes on your PCV system, pull them off and check to see if they're filled with oil. And pull the air snorkel off your throttle body...check to see if there's oil tracking in there too. I've had both.
My car has 172,000 miles on it now, it's probably about time that I start using a heavier weight of oil and bump it up to 5w30. And if it becomes a "problem" I too will switch to regular dino oil and top off as needed. Car runs great. No issues whatsoever. I know oil consumption is normal for a car with 170,000 plus miles but I'll keep an eye on it.

too many to count but probably 1qt/500mi
Lately been using walmart brand 5w-20 but top off with whatever quart 5w or 0w-20bottles are in my trunk (I buy 12 packs)
Very spirited driving style

I put a lot of miles on my car... I go for the every 3-4 month oil change over the mileage.
Current mileage:178,XXX
Oil brand and Viscosity: Varies, mostly Mobile or another premiere brand (normally Wallmart as it's on my way home, no cheapo brands), 5w 20 is what I use 99% of the time.
Rate of Consumption:I get the check oil light normally around 4500-5000 miles, this takes about 2 quarts to get to the top.
Note: Never saw this issue on my LS400 or LS430. I try to explain that this is common on some cars to my wife, she does not understand the logic that cars can consume oil....Sigh..
No leaks or any other issues with the car.

I did my first oil change since I bought the car and it's been about 4k miles and my oil is at the bottom of the dipstick. I'm trying to go the full 5k without adding oil to see how much drains out. After I bought the car my low oil light came on at 4k mile later and I had to add 2 quarts to bring the level back up. I have a question though. Do you guys/girls push the dipstick ALL the way down to the yellow circle or do you leave a little space on the stick? I use Mobil 1 and Pennzoil if they are on sale but I will use the Walmart brand which is considerably cheaper. I've done so many oil changes over the course of the years that I see no noticeable difference.
