2010 LS 460 suspension problem
The CR rated 2010 LS460L and L AWD having a very poor suspension reliability. I'd like to know from some of the members whether or not that is indeed widespread 2010 model year.

I am not sure about 2010 but I just chose to look for only 2011 & 2012 to makes sure I don't have to worry about anything much. 2010 had 4 recalls whereas 2011 had none.

I would still like to stick to CR recommendation. There are only three model years that would attract my attention. 2010, 11 & 12. I'm checking out one 2010. The only sore point is it's air suspension is so expensive to replace.

I have a 2010 LS 460L RWD without air and have had zero suspension problems for the first 69,000 miles. The truth be told I have had zero problems period with the LS.

The problem was addressed in the middle of the 2010 production year. Here's a link to the TSB that gives the specific VIN number cutoffs for the 2010 model year that were affected by the Control Arm problems: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/...dPdf?id=173798
I just bought a 2010 LS460L, and was happy when I checked my VIN against the TSB. For the 460L AWDs, VINs ending in 002131 or later were not effected. My VIN ends with 002245, which means it was produced after they remedied the problem (hopefully!). I do know that my car has 92k miles and still has all 8 original control arms (which probably means I'm living on borrowed time). If/when they fail, I will replace with quality aftermarket parts installed by my independent repair shop (~ $1500 for the full job).

The last 6 of my vin are 040017 which falls inside the TSB and I have had zero problems with my suspension. I ask Lexus of Omaha to check it every time I have it serviced and nothing so far. I will have it checked in mid-May when we come up for our 50th HS reunion and our 70,000 mile service.

Every LS460 I have test driven from 09-12 has had suspension issues/making a noise, on some occasions the noise was so terrible I just turned around after less then a mile and said I don't want to waste the time and be saddled with the huge repair bill if I were to buy it. If you look at the service history of most LS460's for sale you will see suspension issues/repairs, particularly control arm and air suspension issues over and over. They may claim they improved the control arms in mid 2010 to 2011 but looking at the service history and driving the cars, they clearly still have widespread issues, I have experienced and seen many 2011 and 2012's with issues. I think many people just dump these cars when they start making those loud ugly noises and find out the huge repair bill at the dealership.
Word of caution if you are in the market for a LS, look for evidence of spray around the wheel wells, if it is there that normally means someone was spraying the control arms/suspension pieces with a lubricant to try to mask the noise and quiet them down, I saw that on a recent 2011 LS where it was quiet on the test drive but once I had a inspection by Lexus that the seller dealership originally was not going to allow me to get and they put it on a lift a creaking popping noise revealed itself when I was driving it back and was going to make a offer, the PPI gave it a clear bill for the suspension but then it started making a terrible constant creaking/popping noise on low speed turns on me out of the parking lot and I drove it back and had the Lexus guy come back and sit in the car and listen, he then said that will drive you nuts and we normally replace the whole suspension when it starts making those noises(over $3000) just in parts and this was after they said the suspension was fine in the PPI report. Total waste of money but at least I found out it had a issue when driving it back and not after I bought the car.

Guess I got lucky with my 2010. Service history shows the right front air strut was replaced by the first owner, under warranty, sometime around 35K miles. No other issues suspension-wise in the ~25K miles I've had it (102K now).

Unfortunately, I'm starting to hear a grinding sound in the front driver side of the car when braking, even though the all my brakes and rotors are in excellent condition. Since my car is out of warranty I don't want to take it to lexus and pay the price to get this fixed, but I do know a mechanic that can do it for reasonably cheap. So, based off the TSB, can you guys confirm I'm ordering the right part numbers and QTY's in the link below?

I am a absolutely new owner of a 54k mile 08 ls460 and I am brave enough to think I maybe can add to this thread.
50 year off roader.
Looking througn the previius owners service records I noticed that the local shop doing his maintenance had replaced a leaking strut at 40k miles. Hmmmm.
In driving the car it rode rough on less than perfect roads and kicked back fairly hard on square edged bumps. Bang.
owner replaced the oem Bridgestone turanza’s EL42’s with a new set at 30k. Noisy. Rough riding. Kicked on every square edge.
Being as I had the exact same issue last year when we bought a 18k mike 08 sc430 that I fixed I decided to do the same thing on our LS.
Went on tire rack customers feedback board and spent hours reading about others experience with that cars pirellis p1 centurado’s. Terrible ride, steering wander, noisy, bad traction, poor wear.
replaced them with a set of Michelin pilot super sport 245/45/18’s and now the sc rode great, steered straight, quiet, turned better. The Michelin’s were top rated and had hundreds of rave reports on tire rack and other forums
On tire racks turanza feedback board the tires were mercilessly roasted. Every thing I noted was what everyone else noted.
so I went to Costco and ordered the next generation Michelin pilot sport 4S and they were installed today.
Total plush luxury car ride now. Quiet. Turns better, all the little movements and kick backs are gone.
reading the reports of wear today my first thought was the terrible tires shock loads through the control arms wore the bushings prematurely.
my unexpert opinion is that without the severe sharp loads from the non compliant tires you should not experience the wear mentioned.
my LS is now totally smooth. One tenth the wear versus before..
wanna bet my control arms do not wear out that quickly.
the oem tires were that bad and the new pilot power pro 4’s are that good.
if you bought them through Costco and you were not happy they would refund your purchase just like everything they sell.
sorry to rant here but my cars premature shock replacement and everyone’s suspension issues and my experience with both the Pirelli’s and now the Bridgestone’s rough ride and today’s 180 degree different ride after the swap made me post this.
if you are local in south Orange County, ca pm me for a drive. First 100 yards it was noticeable.
Fixed. Even better if the suspension wear issue never shows up. Had to wear the heck out of the suspension with that hard of shocks are applied to it.
hard to believe Toyota built poor quality bushings after 100’s of millions of vechiles.
Tires.......
yes they are 30k tires. Long life tires and other brands ride rough and are killing the suspension IMO.
