I'm glad your warranty was in effect to take care of this major repair for you. Stories like this certainly get everyone thinking about extended warranties. I'd still contend for every owner who has a story like this there are 20 more that lost money on one. I can't imagine there are many engine failures on an LS, and honestly engine failures for any make are fairly rare these days.
You problem sounds like a failed oil pump, which lead to an overheat and failure of the engine.

Wonder if this car was well maintained before you bought it.
Before I bought the car, I had actually posted here and we also checked the Lexus Drivers site. As far as I could tell the car was dealer maintained it's whole life. A trend I continued as well and will probably continue even after the warranty expires.

For the amount I paid for my warranty, I'd recommend everyone to get one regardless. For the prices other people are charging, it would definitely make you pause. But one of the best things about the warranty is the peace of mind it gave me. I could waltz into the dealer and have them look at even the most minute things that I thought didn't feel right and not have to worry about it. I will stress that my ownership experience is definitely NOT the rule but rather an EXCEPTION. And as far as I know, I've never heard of an LS engine failing. Even the Service Advisors were confused. I don't think the oil pump failed and nothing was overheating. In fact the car was perfectly normal. I had driven maybe around 50 miles that day. Turned it off and then about 10 minutes later wen to turn it on and it that's when the lights came on and the weird sound. Unfortunately at that time no one wanted to foot the bill to take the engine apart and figure out exactly what happened so we'll never know why that engine failed.
