Default Advice 2011 Lexus 460 Purchase

Hello Everyone!
I need your advice. I am considering buying a 2011 Lexus 460 Sports package with 106,700 miles. Also, have navigation and the Mark Levinson Premium Audio. The price is $19,800. The car is from a Lexus dealership. They are also offering me the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty at $2700. This would be my first luxury car. I am nervous about the miles, however, maybe I should not be on this vehicle. Thank you for responding.

The LS460 Sports unfortunately have air suspension standard which is the main thing you would want to watch out for especially at its mileage, if you get a dealership to replace the air shocks it is about $2000 per shock and it is not uncommon for 2 or even 4 to go or be going at around the same time, they tend to start going around 100K miles or less. I think $19,800 is kind of high for a 2011 with over 106K miles, I would try to get them lower like around 18K. I would also try for a better/longer warranty for $2700 if you really want one, I would skip the warranty unless you are getting the hybird LS.

Thank you for the reply. The original asking price was $20,880. I offered 19k, their counter and final is $19.8. I'm still uneasy with the mileage. Thanks again. Like you mentioned, the warranty may not be as needed as I thought.

Im not in the US, but I bought at 07 with 85,000 miles.. US miles... 19.8 is WAY WAY over priced.. I would walk away and look elsewhere. The ONLY reason you would want to buy from a stealership is the warranty any other circumstance you would not be walking away better off.

Good luck.

Make sure you get the control arms looked at too, another common issue with the LS, drive and listen for crunching/squeaking when going slowly over speed bumps. Make sure you don't have any brake actuator symptoms, ML amp is working properly, and none of the dash/panels are sticky or fading. I still say shoot for around $18000K, $19800 is too much a 2011 with over 100K miles, especially this time of year with a new model LS that has just been released

Do you have any links or pictures of the car, does carfax check out, did you make sure the service history is good on the Lexus owners website?

Yes the car checks out and the service history is good. When I test drove the car, there was a shimmy in the front end. It was so pronounced that the salesman said that doesn't feel good. Then he proceeded to say it was probably a tire. Funny thing is the car had new tires on it. Looked at the carfax afterwards and saw the car had a minor accident 11 months ago right front where the vibration was strongest. Dealer claims they would make sure to fix whatever is wrong before delivering the car. They won't budge from 19,800. I walked from the deal today.

good job no way should you be paying that money with a problem.... look some more it took me a month or more of intensive looking before i decided on a car that I actually had seen online from the get go.... dont rush... take some time... the best deals can be had privately but you probably want to invest in a paint gauge and be very diligent and not shy about testing 100+ points on the car. Dealers always are going to be a bad deal... but we use them because of the warranty but you gotta make sure its a 100% cover everything sorta warranty if not would be pointless.

good luck post back if you find something nice

I see that you walked away from this deal and with accident history it was the correct move. Just to compare I purchased a 2012 LS SWB in Feb 18 from a Lexus dealer with 103k for $19,750 with a $21,995 ask. This car was sold by the dealer new and again CPO, me being the third owner. It had all service from new done at my selling dealer and was in perfect condition. I did pay more for a dealer car, however I looked at all manner of LS460's in the $13-16k range and none of them could meet my standards; lots of wear and tear and spotty mechanical history.
Even with the service history I've changed the oil to ensure I know a quality product is in there, changed the diff fluid and the plugs. The rotors have been resurfaced twice and appear to be original so I plan to change out pads and rotors to quality products soon.
I agree at the price point you were going to be at for that 2011 it needed to be a perfect car, which in this case it wasn't. Don't be afraid to pay for the right car, just be sure that's what you're getting. Good luck!

Give Roger Yiu (sales/general manager) a call at Johnson Lexus of Raleigh. Tell him you'll pay their asking price if they throw in the 3 year warranty or CPO the car.

He's a hustler!
