For Those Using Synthetic Oil In Your LS460

I recall someone posting a TSB directly from Lexus which stated otherwise. The 10K intervals were intended only for vehicles that came with synthetic oil from the factory. Even if synthetic was used, a 5K change interval was needed.

I wonder how much if any MPG would improve with synthetic versus conventional oil? I’m going to do an experiment on this as I’ve been tracking MPG on both the car display and my own calculations since I’ve had the car these past four months. My LS has had dealer oil changes since new every 5K miles. I just did an oil change myself with full synthetic. Let’s see what happens.
The results are in! After two full tanks, identical MPG.

Performance Oil in LS460 F Sport
Hey guys, I’ve been debating to run 5W-20 Performance Full Synthetic Oil In my LS 460 F sport. I’ve read in another thread the 0W-20 oil is recommended for a 4.6L V8 because of the good gas mileage it provides. Any input from you guys is a great help. Thanks!

I feel that the extended (10k) oil changes plays largely into lower owner cost estimates that are highly advertised. Lots of drivers likely don't pop open their hood so it is a riskier option if their engine starts consuming oil over that 10k interval and potential issues stemming from running with low engine oil levels rather than oil life/quality or filter issues. The swap to 0W-20 from 5W-20 is especially notable for US owners as CAFE standards and emissions seem to factor into that larger recommendation for better fuel economy, however small it might be in the real world.
DIY oil changes being relatively easy, I opt for a shorter OCI (3.1-4.5k miles) that sync better with non USA mileage intervals, particularly the severe one as my operating temps are regularly above 90 F and stop-n-go driving occurs regularly. Lower oil costs and a medium duty filter (Bosch premium), alongside a Fumoto valve make this a relatively quick procedure for my 600h as well being easier on the wallet.

I'm not saying everyone should change to 10,000 mile OCIs with synthetic, just what we and others received from Toyota.

Effectively, it looks like Lexus has certain engines where 0W-20 is exclusively what they recommend in a particular vehicle/engine, while other vehicles/engines have 0W-20 synthetic as an option. When 0W-20 synthetic is exclusive, the changing interval is 10k miles, yet when 0W-20 synthetic is an option, it drops to 5k miles. No idea why.
Now that's what I think they are saying in the Bulletin. Why they actually did it is almost certainly an entirely different matter.

The most important thing to keeping an engine healthy is the oil and a quality oil filter and synthetic oil is inexpensive compared to an engine…. I will keep doing my 5000 mile synthetic oil changes.

Check out: www.amsoil.com Just do a "vehicle look up" for all products for your vehicle. The Amsoil Ea oil filters the best filters that I have come across and I have used them in all my vehicles for years along with their synthetic oils....... Just look at the "construction" of the Lexus Ea oil filter compared to the OEM and you will see what I mean. Oil Filters are the most important part on an engine no matter what type of oil (synthetic or dino) you use so why "cheap out" on the filter.
Just to save my colleagues here some legwork, here is a list of part numbers I have assembled for replacement oil filter cartridges for my 2007 Lexus LS460.
ACDelco PF2660 Duraguard Gold (Cellulose)

Last time I used the Mobil1 synthetic filter. It is manufactured by Champion Laboratories, a volume producer of oil filters … and it does so under no less than 30 different private labels & house brands. One reveal is that it is stamped "mmddyy EEn Product of USA Producto De EUA." Another reveal is that the Walmart webpage for the product plainly states the manufacturer is Champion. You can pick up the Mobil1 synthetic filter at O'Reilly, AutoZone, Advance & Amazon for about $17 before tax.
The RoyalPurple, ToyotaTRD & Amsoil filters are all the EXACT SAME FILTER (other than cosmetic branding). And yes they are all made by Champion Laboratories. The comments and photos I saw indicated the quality of construction is quite high. Unlike all the others, they have metal end caps with silicone seals, metal cores and the filter material is mesh-backed. The RoyalPurple flavor is the least-expensive of the three. The least-expensive sourcing is Walmart-sold&shipped for $16.75 plus a $7 shipping charge, before tax.
The various cellulose filters were generally available in the $6 to $13 range.
I saw enough negative comments along the way to sway me away from FRAM, Purolator, STP. YMMV. BeckArnley is now a brand owned by a company named DR1VParts and apparently has become mostly a reboxer of sourced parts. The NAPA Gold oil filter appears to be sourced from Wix. STP is licensed to AutoZone by Energizer Holdings for house-branding its oil & air filters.

Great information here ^ from DrQuality……… THANKS for doing the research and posting the results.
BTW! Our 2012 LS just turned 100K miles and the engine is running strong with very little oil consumption……. Thanks to Amsoil and Ea oil filters.

I run Castrol Syntec 5w30, and change it every 4-5k miles. I usually use a Bosch filter but have used Mobile 1 when I couldn't get a Bosch in time. You can tell the oil needs changed at that point. I do not think I would ever let any oil go 10k miles without a change.

Installed the amzoil 0-20 yesterday. My feeling on my oil use is the motor was never broke in properly. 10 years old. 54k miles. Idled around basically. Now I am running it to redline regularly. For sure 10k change intervals. Or longer

Can you elaborate, please? I'm doing same in about 1k.
