Default For Those Using Synthetic Oil In Your LS460

I understand Lexus recommends oil changes every 5 thousand for the LS, even with the use of full synthetic oil. Is that the schedule you are using or do you follow the usual 10 thousand mile interval? Is there something unique about the LS motor that necessitates 5 thousand mile oil changes?

I'm on at least 15K mile changes, Mobil 1.

There is nothing special about this engine. Not forced induction, it turns over lazy RPM at speed, I'm far from concerned.

In fact, I have a feeling, oil testing on what's in there, currently, might indicate 20K miles per change is fine.

The car holds 9 quarts of oil...for a 4.6L engine. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. And, yes, I'm putting my money where my mouth is.

Very ironic timing to post this. Earlier this morning I was reviewing my oil change bill from earlier this week and wondered why I was paying for 0W-20 synthetic but still doing 5k intervals. Did a quick search of "0W-20" here and found a couple of interesting threads. Effectively, it looks like Lexus has certain engines where 0W-20 is exclusively what they recommend in a particular vehicle/engine, while other vehicles/engines have 0W-20 synthetic as an option. When 0W-20 synthetic is exclusive, the changing interval is 10k miles, yet when 0W-20 synthetic is an option, it drops to 5k miles. No idea why. I've been doing 0W-20 synthetic for about 20k miles in 5k intervals.

I have always done 5K changes ever since I started using synthetic 20 years ago. My reasoning is that it gives me a cushion to delay to 7500 miles when life gets too busy. The longest I've gone between oil changes was 8K on our previous Sienna minivan. Mostly I am more concerned about the ability of the oil filter to perform well at 10K or beyond. It is interesting though to read of mckellyb's oil test results, which indicate his oil filter is still doing its job.

I do what the Lexus techs do on their personal cars...... Change the oil at 5000.

The oil may be tested for high mileage but what about the filter??...... The Lexus filter is NOT the most sophisticated filter compared to other filters.

Direct injected, timing chain, low tension rings, variable valve timing...I'd change it a lot closer to 5,000 than 10,000.

Some manufacturers are scaling back their oil change intervals and recalibrating their oil life monitors - fuel dilution on DI engines is an issue. So is carbon and soot for timing chain rollers.

My trusted Lexus mechanic says I should change it at 5k intervals, so thats what I'm doing.

If you're doing longer than 5k intervals, I would absolutely use a better filter than the OEM Toyota filter

I wonder how much if any MPG would improve with synthetic versus conventional oil? I’m going to do an experiment on this as I’ve been tracking MPG on both the car display and my own calculations since I’ve had the car these past four months. My LS has had dealer oil changes since new every 5K miles. I just did an oil change myself with full synthetic. Let’s see what happens.

It won't improve at all really. Very slight.

Yeah, dead dinos vs. synthetic MPG will be such a small difference, you'll never be able to account for it except under very strictly controlled (laboratory) conditions.

I've tracked MPG/repairs since my first vehicle back in 1984, and it's amazing what does/doesn't make a difference.

I was encouraged at what engine life is possible with these cars.

the 346k mile ls460 had 5k dealer oil changes. TGMO

I had aftermarket fresh oil replaced with the TGMO.

too nice a car. I want 346k out of mine.

like a lot of you I enjoy driving the car. Do not need or want something different.

will keep both our 08’s.

Thanks to Lexus. Unbelievable cars.

if you intended to drive these until you or it is dead would you use TGMO in it? And plugs and trans full flush every 60k Miles.,

i will.

just ordered more TGMO

I'm running TGMO in mine as well. I'm also running better than OEM filters, even with 5k drains.

Default Miles!

I can only hope that my LS will give me that many miles. I'm at 127,000. However, I'm more concerned about my air suspension
