Default Help me understand our headlights.. high, lows...drls... all options..

Hi guys
So help me understand the situation with our headlights....

1. So both high and lows are xenons right?

2. What is the stock colour/k for the low beams? 5000?

3. And the DRLs work off the high beams at a lower watts? Is that how it works? Or what is producing that lower K colour of the DRL?

4. So what is the stock colour/k for the high beams?

5. So is there a way to achieve a cooler colour for the DRLs without sacrificing highbeams?

Some like a more yellow on the fogs, I am undecided... but I think I prefer everything to match including the DRLs. I am hoping to achieve a pure white colour without any yellowness and without too much blue... So would that be 5k or 6k ?

THANKS !

No, on your LS your low beams are xenons, your high beams are halogen. 13-17 LS460s have standard bi-xenon headlamps (highs are xenon too) or optional LED headlights.

2. What is the stock colour/k for the low beams? 5000?
Stock color temp is 4,100. All OEM HID systems are 4,100-4,300.

DRL's are the halogen high beams on low power. 13-17 they became an LED strip.

4. So what is the stock colour/k for the high beams?
Halogen

5. So is there a way to achieve a cooler colour for the DRLs without sacrificing highbeams?
Not really. You can replace the DRLs with LED's, but that effects high beam output.

I would say you would want 5,000k. I had a set of Osram CBI bulbs in my 2015 with HIDs that I really liked. In order to have all match you'll loose your high beams though.

ok, so if they are halogen I cannot switch them to a cooler temp halogen? I do not really know how halogen works

Halogen

What about just changing to a better quality less yellow halogen bulb that would whiten the light out put in DRL mode no?

You can get them both ways. The 6000k weren't available when I got mine.

Amazon Amazon

Xenons won't work in a low power situation for the DRL, and they won't work well in a high beam, you'll loose your flash to pass, etc. Xenons have to have a ballast to ignite and it takes them a second to come on, not great for an on/off application like a high beam.

Bi-xenon systems work by adjusting the reflector to provide high beams off of the same bulb as the lows vs having a second set of reflectors to be the highs.

what about these? these would solve the DRL function no?

I guess an easier option would be just to get whiter bulbs

No, you'll still have the issue where the xenons won't run on a low power mode, and you'll loose your flash to pass, etc.

"Whiter" bulbs aren't going to make the DRLs look white because of the low power mode.

well why not have a relay or something that makes the drl in full power without it being on high beam, so the light looks better.. make whats the bulb flash high? the power or some mechanism ?

Theres no such thing as "full power but not on high beam". The reflector housing is aimed for high beams, so if it was always on as a DRL at full power your high beams would always be on blinding everybody. The only thing that happens is the bulbs light up, or don't.

Honestly? I would just leave your HIDs on all the time thus bypassing the DRLs entirely.

yeah looks like that is the only reasonable option for now. Btw do you know what the low beam bulb model is ? It is not listed in the manual in the bulb page.

**** NVM found it D4S on xenondepot****

Yep, D4S.

I don't think an LED bulb will run at low power like that without flickering.

I never knew how that worked, so I had to go out and check my high beams after reading your post to see how that worked. Thanks for the info!

My "L" looks like it has three headlights on each side and the inner-most "light" never comes on. Is it something that's functioning other than a light?

No problem!

Your L has the LED lights, The innermost light doesn't function, its used for the night vision system that is really rare.
