Default New 18 ES 350 Ultra or Certified 13, 14, 15 LS460

Alright guys give me your thoughts. I already have a 14 ES Ultra and a 16 Ultra. The 16 is about to go back in on as the lease expires and I"m debating on getting a heck of a deal on another new 2018 ES 350 Ultra or getting a certified LS460 in the 13, 14 or 15 year range. I'd prefer a 460L if I can find the right color combo. Give me some feedback from the LS family here on your thoughts as I"m pretty well versed in the ES350 line having one I bought in 2014 and the lease from 2016. They have been great cars but I think I'd like to test these 460 waters. Appreciate your thoughts.

Having owned both an ES and an LS I would go for the LS everytime. And it's not even close! I will guess that most LS enthusiasts on this subforum will agree. To me, I look at the ES as a starter Lexus. A good car but pretty much a rebadged Camry with a high end trim package. Every other car on the road is a Camry or a Honda Accord. Good cars. I have to say that LS is better looking, faster, better handling, smoother, quieter, and much less common than the ES.

I second this. We still have a 2006 ES and after we bought the 2006 LS I stopped driving the ES completely. Ben has it right, the ES did start to look like a lesser Lexus...well, because it is. Not trying to be mean about it. You just see the ES differently after you become familiar with an LS. The LS is roomier, more refined, and feels more special. The ES moved to the Avalon platform a while ago but the LS is still the nicer vehicle and expectedly so since it does cost a good chunk more when new. Definitely go with the long wheelbase (I wish ours was an L).

If you can find an LS with the options and colors you want at a price you like, buy it.

Agreed. And no offense to any ES owner, or to the car itself, I always consider a fully loaded Avalon to be a better alternative.

Here's an interesting review on the ES 350 F-Sport -

He drove the LS 500 F-Sport a few days later, and while he liked it, he said it wasn't twice the car for twice the money. He was pretty impressed with the ES.

**** financial guy here, so the closeout deals on an 18 ES may be appealing. However, we may be looking to upgrade my wife's 13 ES300h, and my current thinking is between the new 2019 ES and a used 16 or 17 LS.

Drove a 2014 460L that was certified used. Honestly, its a nice car, no doubt about it, but this probably wasn't the best one to do my demo in before I made the decision. I got on Lexus Owners and the car has had quite a bit of Engine / under body Work in the past I saw. I would have expected it to be a little tighter than what it was. It had 70,000 miles on it but my 2014 has that much on it as well and it rides quite a bit better. No doubt about it I just got into the wrong one today for the test drive. The quietness was there for sure and the ride over bumps etc, was a lot more isolated but paying 35-40K for a 4 year old car over a brand new ES350 Ultra for 40 to 41K, I don't know about that right now. I"m going to keep thinking it over and crunching some numbers. Thanks for you guys input. I really wanted to get in this car and go down the road and be wowed by it but that's not what my wife or I thought.

Personally I've learned not to assume an "L" on an 13-17 LS460L to be the most desirable LS, nor the trim with the most comfort features (excluding the 600h). I've learned to just take the "L" as what it is, a Long Wheel Base, and nothing more. I've seen some L that are very basic in features. Some don't even have ML, Air Suspension, LED headlight, Radar cruise, HUD, and/or the Luxury package. Some "L" MSRPs are even less than that of some SWBs.

So indeed you might have tested an 14 460L that 1) is not in the best conditions, and 2) doesn't have some (or most) of the mentioned desirable options. I think it's still worth your time to search for an 13-17 Certified LS 460 (L if preferred) with all or most of the desirable features/options, over an 18 ES.

For me as someone who wants my LS460 to be on the luxury side, I would look for one with ALL the mentioned features and especially the Luxury package that include, among other things, double-pane glass to make thing even more quiet. They are out there, but kind of rare.

That is a good point, sprtent. I would have a hard time deciding between our SWB Ultra Lux versus a base L. I would rather add L to what I have rather than trade features for rear legroom. Limited pickings though. Cargurus returned 147 460Ls nationwide. That averages to three per State here!

I would encourage anyone shopping for an LS 460 to CAREFULLY study a Lexus sales brochure for whatever model year one is seeking to determine standard and optional equipment.. There seems to be some incomplete or erroneous information along these lines floating around on this forum. Here's a couple of examples:

1) There was long thread some time ago about a member's search for a 2013 SWB with the Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS). The member was frustrated by an inability to locate one so equipped. There was no need for such a search or the ensuing frustration because that option was only available on LWD cars; and

2) There's been mention in more than one thread about the desirability of finding a car with "double-pane glass." Apparently this means laminated side glass. There's no need to look far as it was standard across the model line in 2013 and, presumably, the following years.

Now, it is conceded that not all information will be found in a sales brochure nor will all of it necessarily be accurate. However, it's a great starting point.

I would look for a model with a strong service history before you go take it for a test drive. If you're looking for cheaper, go higher miles and older. To me that's where the best value is. I bought mine when my wife was out of town.

I would have responded sooner but couldn't stop laughing. That is hilarious. I would be too afraid to try that approach out of fear what my wife would buy the next time I'm out of town. Kudos to you (and your understanding wife).
