Oil Change Interval
#16
After reviewing the service history of my '08 600h, I found notes for recommending replacing the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals after a plug replacement at 120k. Found that very interesting since this car was meticulously maintained by dealer and Lexus indy shop and had 5k OCI with 0W-20 TGMO.
I haven't delved too much deeper into any potential leaks since getting the car. A Lexus mechanic told me he saw no leaks or issues when changing my differential fluid. But am amazed at how smooth and low rpms the car runs when highway cruising (under 1500 easily for 70+%). The 4.5k OCI is for severe service and a 9k is for normal service for this car.
I think there is something to be said about using High mileage oils with seal conditioners earlier and perhaps using a heavier oil despite CAFE standards in the US. Europe and other parts of the world easily recommend weights from 0W-20 to 20W-50 for this engine. Oil changes are a breeze for this car and I added a Fumoto valve to make the job even easier.
I anticipate putting on around 15-20k per year for the next year or so in sunny SoCal and its "wonderful" highways. Will see with 5k oil changes and Valvoline 10W-30 HM Full Syn oil what the results are.

The previous owner had put 5W30, I did an oil change a few weeks ago and put in 0W20. It can get cold here in the winter, not as cold as Canada but maybe around 0 deg celcius. The roads are bad, traffic is constantly start stop..... should I move back to 5W30 next oil change?

LOL, exactly. My guy charges me $30 to change the oil, I bring my own fluid and filters, he's paying his tech at least $15 to do that...then he has to dispose of the oil, etc. He's trying to cheat me out of an extra $15 a year?

Since the 460 engine hadn't changed (little if at all) from 2007 through 2017 why did Lexus recommend oil change intervals from 5000 to 10000 miles beginning, I think, with the 2014 model year? They were recommending 5000 intervals even with synthetic before 2014. Any significant changes to the engine?
My read of it is that Lexus is saying "0w20 has improved so much that we can increase its interval from 5k miles to 10k miles. HOWEVER if you are the owner of one of those engines where you might not be using 0w20 (because we specified other options such as 5w20), well we're not taking a chance and so your interval stays at 5k ... whether you say you have been using 0w20 or not."
Since 5w20 is officially an option for the LS460, the required interval remained unchanged by this Tech Tip at 5,000 miles, even if 0w20 (that, btw, is always a full synthetic) is being used.
Now that's what I think they are saying in the Bulletin. Why they actually did it is almost certainly an entirely different matter.
