Default Mods: Lower grill modification, painted headlights, yellow fog lights

Thought I'd share a few modifications I've made to my 2011 LS460. I covered the fog lights in yellow vinyl film and added a metal mesh to the openings beside the fog lights. I hot-glued plastic push pins onto the back of the bumper to secure the mesh beside the foglight and then drove a screw through the black plastic piece next to the fog light.

I also cut out the center section of the lower grill and added metal mesh to that. I drilled some holes in the grill surround and secured the mesh with zip ties.

Final modification (and what encouraged the others) was repainting the headlights. My car's headlights were yellowing/checking and needed a new finish. My car also had chrome trim rings around the headlights (not sure if that's standard?) but I didnt like the look. So, those came off and the headlights sanded with 180, 220, 400, 600 and then wet sanded with 800 before I shot a few coats of clear coat onto them.

Done so tastefully it looks stock! Great job. How did you paint your headlights? Thanks for sharing.

Like yellow fogs, always have. Interested in how well your colored vinyl holds up. I have the JDM Fogs, would love if they had a yellow HID bulb I could simply pop in there but keep the white LED drl's.

How long did it take you to remove the bumper?

Did it take a lot of pressure to pop the bumper out of the area around the headlight once all the bolts were out.

Looks great!

Those chrome trim rings you had around your headlights were not OEM.

Yes they are, he removed the chrome bezel from around the projector. Here's the factory headlight:

Now check his out above.

Thats not what he was talking about. His headlights are the same as yours, no difference.

This is what he was describing his car had originally when he bought it:

You can see the slim chrome trim around the edge of the headlamp housing...thats an aftermarket trim.

Thought I'd answer several questions at once.

I painted the headlights with catalyzed clear coat, same stuff that you paint the body with (after the color base coat). I used Acme finish 1 which is an entry level clear thats cheap. I'm not a professional painter but have painted a couple of cars, bunches of wheels, and headlights.

The bumper comes off pretty easy, line of bolts underneath, several in the wheel well. It goes back on harder, since you have to line it up on both sides so that the plastic catches on the fender, and around the headlight all line simultaneously. Would be MUCH easier to install with two people AND taking off the under body panels. Next time I'll do that.

Above comment clarifying the trim rings around headlight is correct. they were decorative trim pieces held on with two sided tape and messed up the lines of the car. I have them on rear taillights too and their removal is a future project.

No night pics with fog lights on yet. I will try and get some in future. My guess is that you'll be disappointed though, with white bulbs they look faded yellow with only the film. yellow bulbs in future may be in order.
