FYI, you can have an independent mechanic or trust worth suspension shop take a look at the control arm bushings and give you some insight. Don't just start replacing everything the Dealer states.

I take my cars to the dealers for the oil changes and their so called inspections. Then I go home, inspect what they have told me is wrong and determine if it actually needs attention. If it does, I order the parts and go to work.

Last year I ordered new engine and cabin air filters for my old IS250. Replaced them and took my car to the dealer later that week for an oil change. Wouldn't you know it, at the top of their list for items in the "Needs Attention" column was the air filters. Now, to be fair they said they didn't need replacing yet, but were getting dirty and would need replacing soon. However, I'm not sure I believe they could really get all that dirty in less then a weeks time.

As a follow up to my original post I have since gotten more clarity on what the problem is. The Coolant Valley Pipe needs to be replaced and where the coolant has been leaking. I was told by both the dealer and an independent mechanic that this is a 15 hour job because of where it is and what needs to be done to access and replace it. A 15 hr job at a dealer or an independent contractor that is $125 an hr is a pretty major job and either way is going to be a pretty expensive fix.

The other issue I was told that I need to keep my eye on but probably have about 10k still to go is the suspension arms will need to be replaced and the bushings cracked - not sure I said that right. I am having everything checked by the independent mechanic to determine how much life I have left in my car after I do this repair. Surprised and disappointed and probably won’t buy this model again if I want to keep it long term.

Did the independent shop tell you that was the issue or did you tell the independent shop that the Lexus stealership told you that was the issue?

The issue here is one of unrealistic expectations. Coolant leaks and worn suspension bushings are things you would expect to need to be addressed on a car that old, nothing lasts forever

Sorry to hear about the steep estimates. Why is an indy shop charging you $125 an hour labor? Find another shop. There are plenty of members from CA, and they can suggest indy shops based on where you live. Good luck!

Yeah $125 is way too much for an independent shop. Mine is $85.

Jeeeezus.

First, there is no "Chassis" on any Lexus except the LX and GX line (and even that may not be the case anymore), they are all unibody, not body-on-frame cars.

Secondly, SW17LS is right, Dealer's are crooks. My cars never see the dealers after I buy them unless they are in for warranty stuff, or oil changes if I get a good deal there.

Third, if you don't know anything about cars, PLEASE find a mechanic you trust. We (honest mechanics) do exist. Control arms and suspension components will cost a fortune through Lexus. MyLparts.com has everything you need, and if its too expensive there, some aftermarket stuff can be had at rockauto.com or amazon for much cheaper. Just be aware that those parts are not always as good.

Brakes shouldn't cost any more than on a regular car, they aren't carbon ceramic or anything special. $500 for a front brake job is absurd IMO, but thats probably because I do that stuff myself and it costs me (at most) $200 in parts and an afternoon of my time.

SoCal has some great certified indy Lexus mechanics. Also, as with most used cars, it is optimal to have as much service history in the car before purchasing. After a decade or so and nearly 150k miles, it is reasonabe to assume that control arms or control arm bushing will need to be replaced. They are a wear and tear item. Now, if they last for less than a reasonable amount of mileage or time, then there may be valid concern. To my knowledge, a coolant valley leak is not common for the 460, so that is indeed unfortunate.

Hello. I have a 2008 LS460 with almost 150,000 miles on it. It needs a radiator ASAP. Does it matter if I use a radiator from the local auto parts store that has a life-time warranty? I also need a brake actuator. The dealer's charges are over $4,000 for these repairs so I am using a local mechanic.Should I use genuine lexus parts; if so, please give me a reliable online Lexus parts dealer. Thanks!

Lifetime warrant doesn't help you much when you have to do the job all over again. Get the
Denso 221-3174 Denso 221-3174
it will fit perfectly and they are well made.

Glad you have a good independent mechanic, is this the part you need?

Thank you for this information! I thought with the life time warranty I would at least not have to purchase the part again if something went wrong with it.

I would expect a radiator to be a one time fix for the lifetime of the car or your ownership of it, whichever is shorter.

I was also told the breaks and chassy (?) will also need to be replaced down the road at a much higher cost I believe they said $8K to replace all that after initial 2800 cost. Is this worth fixing and is that common for car at 147K miles? I have no idea what to do? I thought these cars were built to last?
Passed the warranty. I go to local auto shops. The dealer asked me to replace motor bushes at 130,000 miles. I didn't believe them and I am still using the original one.
