Default 2010 LS460 Over heating

Hey guys, having an issue with our 2010 ls460 rwd 87k. The car is over heating! Is there any common issues with that?

Did you check the coolant level?

Also, check the radiator, make sure a plastic bag or something hasn't gotten stuck to it.

Once you get past that, I don't know...thermostat, maybe?

Have you verified that the car is actually overheating or are you just basing it off the temperature gauge in the car? the reason why I ask this is because my 2011 had a bad heater exchange plate which caused the car to go up all the way to hot but it wasn't actually overheating. Total to replace at dealer would have been $1548 without warranty and it included replacing heater exchange plate, intake gasket, throttle body gasket, and o-rings.

Ended up being low on coolant, but why would the coolant be low? Do these cars have leaky water pump issues?

The system has a leak somewhere. Have it pressure tested. Soon.

Regarding leaky water pumps - Very possible. My water pump was weeping out the bottom hole very slightly (about 83K miles). Over a 6 month period my coolant level dropped about 1.5" in reservior. I tool an inspection mirror and flashlight and seen alot of dry crusty pink residue on bottom of water pump - note, never seen a drop on garage floor. So, eBay special water pump and fresh coolant and now 104K miles and still going good.

The water pump is definitely a candidate for leak, but also look beneath the car at the transmission bell housing. At 96K our 2013 was diagnosed with a valley plate seal leak. I have detailed it in the thread link below. My coolant would be low four days after topping off. Not a drop on the garage floor either because the covers and panels beneath the car catch the drips. Initially, I bought a $35 wireless endoscope from Amazon to verify the leaks but now I know where to spot the symptoms. If it is leaking at the valley plate, then look towards the center of the firewall and you should be able to make out pink residue, and/or you'll see it running down the transmission bell housing underneath. Good luck and hope you determine the source soon.

Water pump leaking at 83,000 miles on a nine year old car is something I'd definitely consider being the problem. Get a flashlight and look for pink crusty staining around the water pump. Be very careful leaning over the radiator, there is a coolant bypass nipple that is plastic and EASILY breakable on the coolant reservoir.
