2013 LS 460 - Ticking sound when idling in gear or reverse.
Wonder if it’s normal to hear ticking sound when the gear is in reverse or 1st gear? No noise when in park or in neutral.

I get the ticking too sometimes but that's when it's cold and the car is warming up. In my case its coming from the motor and I chalked it up to the direct injection system. The motor is noisier than the 1UZ-FE for sure.

Thanks guys! I recorded a couple video clips and I could hear the noise more now. I could hear the ticking noise faintly when in park. And the noise is pronounced when in 1st gear.
I probably have to upload video clips to YouTube as I couldn’t attached the clips directly.

i don't know the specifics since i am not a car guy and not sure if my ticking sound is the same as yours. i had the ticking sound also and it got louder and louder as years went on. told my independent mechanic and he found out it was the valves. he said this was the one that was under lexus recall years ago and the previous owner did the warranty work already. luckily i still had a third party extended warranty that covered doing the valve repair again. now i don't hear the ticking at all....

Hi all ,
There has been a lot of feedback on the ticking sound of the ls 460 and it could be due to many isues
Try performing the below services
Spark plugs Replacement
Fuel injector cleaning ( Both Direct and Port injectors)
Engine oil ( 5w 40 or 10w 40)
If the ticking sound still remains, then it could be the issue of valve springs or piston Slaps.
It all depends how the ticking sound emerge...is it during cold start ? Or if the car warms after running several.kms? Or does the ticking sound come at idle ( below 800 rpm in Park mode or in D ?
70% of the chances could be due to direct injectors present only in U.S.A spec vehicles.

I started noticing this ticking sound after I did an oil change. But I didn’t pay any attention to the sound prior to the oil change so I don’t know if it was an issue before or not. All I did was loosen the plastic cover to access the oil filter. It has 3 screws to hold it up. I have to check again. Thanks all.
