Default 1st code on my ls460 AWD! P0022-Camshaft timing over retarded.

After owning this car for 2-1/2 years, it finally threw a code a couple of days ago. Until then, All I ever did was put gas in it and change oil, plus a set of tires over the summer. The scanner showed a code of P0022 and the dash display said "Check VSC System". Research indicated that the camshaft timing control motor may be to blame. At $1100.00 new and $250+ used, I am not in a big hurry to replace it just now, especially if that may not be what is really wrong with it. For now, I just cleared the codes and will wait and see if it comes back. Since the code appears to be related to a sticking valve in the control motor, I was wondering if it was possible to clean the one I have instead of replacing it. Anyone out there have experience with this particular problem? By the way, the car currently has 166k miles and had 138k miles when we purchased it.
