2010 LS 460 Engine misfire
Hi. I have a 2010 LS 460 AWD with about 110K miles. For some time I've been getting the occasional engine misfire - check engine, traction control indicators come on. It had been happening when I punched the accelerator, which for me is rather seldom. Usually the car slows to 10 MPH, not always. BTW, if I clear the error with my OBD tool, everything is fine for awhile. I took to a Lexus dealer and they wanted to change the plugs before they would look it at. Done. Recently it's gotten worse as it can happen on startup after sitting overnight. Now Lexus has done some basic testing (swapping plugs, coils, etc) and cylinder 2 is the problem. Now they want to remove the cover ($750) to get a look. They are saying probably a broken valve spring. ($2100 total fix). Not sure that made much sense to me - why wouldn't that cause a continuous problem?
I let a local respected mechanic have a look (not Lexus certified) and he is certain it is not mechanical. Not sure that made much sense to me either. Apparently he found that an ECM update (for years 2009-2012) fixes this issue. But it seems to me the Lexus dealer would have done that update right off.
For some reason I have a bad feeling this could get real expensive in a hurry. Any ideas?
TIA.

Check for the recall and compression/leak down test all the cylinders, do some coil swapping and monitor the data stream when driving to see the behavior of the VVT system and injectors/fuel when the error occurs.
This is something very hard to help with remotely sorry
