I failed a wheel bearing this exact way. On a pothole hit hard enough to cut the sidewall by folding it over and pinching it on the rim edge, the ball bearings will dent the inner and outer races and start making a noise. It may last thousands of miles without failing, all while making that weird noise. No play in the wheel bearing, no noise evident by spinning the wheel manually while on jackstands, just an odd noise until it is replaced.
This can happen on new cars during rail transport. I bought a Corvette many years ago that made a "woowoowoowoowoo" noise like snow tires, even when I put new tires on it. So, I just thought it was a normal noise Corvettes made. 20 years later, I replaced the rear wheel bearings, and presto, the noise went away.
In my experience, Toyota/Lexus products have very fragile wheel bearings.
