Default Engine shaking when put into gear , any guesses ?

Hey guys

I guess i have a love hate relationship with these cars.

Might pick up a project 460 on a trade , when you have your foot on the brake and put into gear, the engine starts shuddering

Both drive and reverse ,but once u start driving it , it goes away and is smooth as butter

I'm guessing engine or tranny mounts?

He said the dealer told him its plugs but u can rarely take the word of a seller.

It also has a periodic VSC light that comes and goes , brakes work fine other then a clunk at low speeds which I think is control arms.

Thanks in advance

I would run away from it. Or go and get a full inspection by a good independent Lexus mechanic. I wouldn't make a decision until I knew exactly what was wrong with it and why. Depends what you want. What do you mean "project" LS460? Most times when someone talks about a project car they usually mean basically a rolling shell they are going to restore.

I'm thinking the same ,I popped the hood and had him recreate it , the engine itself is vibrating, and the noise it the engine cover rattling

What year and how many miles? I suspect the VSC light is related to the shuddering. I would clean the throttle body and MAF sensor first and use a diagnostic tool to check for codes. A stuffed up throttle body can cause some vehicles to throw all sorts of codes. Bad or fouled fuel injector(s) is another possibility, so checking for codes to narrow it down would be one of the first things I'd do.

But wouid it shake only at idle during a gear change ?

Isnt VSC related to abs , brakes and such ?

And it's an 07 with about 160 000 miles , could get it for peanuts

The engine surprisingly drives super smooth and still has all its power aside from the vibrations at idle

My bad, I was focusing on the "engine shuddering" part. With a bad motor mount, if you are able to put the car in gear and hold the brake down while giving it some gas, you can sometimes actually see (or someone else) the motor moving each time you give it some gas. When you drove it and came to a stop, did you feel vibrations while stopped and still in gear? The noise you heard when braking could be the motor moving and further evidence of a bad mount(s).

I'd bet on bad engine mounts. Lexus would charge you about $4k for that - it's a ton of labor. Someone within the forum recently did it themselves and posted a lot of pics, but I believe it's a pretty sophisticated job to DIY.

Damn, i assumed it was an easy job, not sure why

The car sold anyways , for reference it was a 2007 Long wheel base with 165 000 miles , I got him down to $5000 Canadian ( $3600 usd) but after driving it I realized it also needed control arms, possibly struts but not urgent, and he said the VSC light was coming on periodically ,so I offered him $4000 cad ( $2950 usd) and decided to wait

It Sold in less then 24 hours

Not too upset , I really didnt need another 460 but would of been fun bringing it back to life

It also had a 13 inch aftermarket fold down screen installed which was pretty cool
