Yes I agree, it sounds like the water is what has caused your issue. The ML amps are prone to water damage due to the location. I had water damage to mine years ago because of one single time driving in the rain with the rear bumper cover off. There are flaps behind the rear bumper cover for ventilation of the amp and these same flaps let the rain come in when the bumper cover was removed.
