I just removed my throttle body and will be cleaning it shortly. Here are some pictures of how it looks removed. Mine is pretty dirty. A look inside the manifold with TB removed Forward side of the TB Rear side of the TB
Cleaning done (I used a toothbrush, shop towel and TB cleaner). Just be sure to disconnect the battery neutral cable before disconnecting and removing the TB. Removing the TB from the car allows you to clean both sides without manually moving the TB plate/butterfly valve assembly as is important for drive Forward side after cleaning. by wire systems such as ours. Here are the after pics.
In general I understand that is bad to manually move the plate on any drive by wire car like ours, especially when the battery is hooked up and/or the ignition is on. I understand that Toyota TB's are not ultra sensitive to this issue, but better to be safe than sorry. I did move the plate a little bit here and there when I was cleaning the TB in order to access the hinge areas. Just move it and release slowly and the minimal amount necessary IMO and you will be OK.
