It never did, never supposed to. Only open. Safety feature.

If you search, you'll find someone who wired their car to close. It didn't look that hard but I'm not handy enough to try it

Well, I've yet to do a search on this matter, but it's kinda far from trivial. One of my clients bought remote controlled relay (with a fob) from ali and ghetto wired it into trunk lid parallel to closer button. He gave a weird reason for this mod too. Although I can somewhat relate - he's frequently passing check/search points, so he said, it's a bummer to get out every time to close it. Not sure if it's okay, still think safety first.

One of those strange Toyota/Lexus things. It closes with the button on my Mercedes.

Yeah I ask because my 2012 Acura MDX closes the gate automatically as well. Seems silly for Lexus not to close the trunk via fob or the interior button as well. I'm handy with a soldering iron and I'll look into the mod as long as it's a clean OEM looking mod.

Lexus SUV's open and close the hatch, the hatches have a rubber strip with a pressure sensor
that reverses the action if something gets in the way.
The Sedan trunk lids do not have the reversing sensors strip and (at least in North America) do not close remotely.
