I currently own a GX 470 with some mild off-roading upgrades, but looking to add another vehicle because 13 smiles per gallon is killing me. I’m looking to take some long distance road-trips. Always liked big body cars, and looking for something comfortable for long distances and reliable. I’m interested in the 2013+ models, but if someone wanted to talk me into the pre 2012 models now’s the time. Are the 2015+ models better for any reason other then the upgraded tech? My criteria is no wrecks and extensive, preferably Lexus service history, single owner is a plus but not requirement. I’m a little capable with a wrench, I did some work myself on my GX (front uca’s and lca’s and air suspension delete in lieu of a lift)so some wear and tear part replacement is okay by me. Also what mileage are you folks getting on the highway with which model, I’ve seen some say 30mpg+ is that accurate?

Get a 2013+ as new as possible with fewer miles as possible. I get 19 mpg combined on my AWD. I got 40 miles commute everyday.

Yes it is, I can average it over 25 if I am careful but I usually am around 23-25. IF you are heavy handed it will get 12 but it's hard to go under 19 unless you constantly full launch, they prefer 65-75 mph as their best speed. Mine is the lightest possible RWD SWB non-air version with oversized track UHPAS tires so you probably would get a little more than me if you use touring tires of stock track width size, fuel economy is outstanding IMO since my first car got 11.3-13 so this is magic to me. They are also somewhat quick, you can keep up with 8 speed 5.7 hemi cars or 6.1 SRTs

Post 13s are better unless you can find a fully interior replaced 07-12, you will omit some of the newer tech and materials though but the actual car is the same. The Brake actuator is something to pay attention to as is the VGRS system and air suspension if the car you are looking at has those......If you are coming from a GX any of these will have a completely superior ride quality and you will also find them easy to work on as far as hard parts go.

If you can find an exceptional 2012 for a decent price, I see no reason to go any further. My 08 was my favorite Lexus. If I'd had a 2012, I'd probably still have it. The car was smooth and quiet, but without the bluetooth audio which is why I upgraded (I probably could have upgraded the head unit with a Vais, but I digress). If you'd like a more current LS460, and want the best of the available tech Lexus offered, go with a 2016-2017. Either way you won't be disappointed.

13+ has the awful mouse which is a royal pain to use when driving. That and the start of the out-of-control grille.

The current ES350 is just as big and pretty much as comfortable as the LS. A lot less expensive and gets much better gas mileage. Its a great car for long road trips. I prefer the LS but its not perfect by any means. If I had the choice of a new ES vs a used LS, I'd probably go for the ES.

Just an alternate consideration.

The current ES doesn't come close to the LS, sorry but it falls short in every way possible. Fuel economy as well, doesn't come close with the V6 driven the same way as an LS and the 4 cyl is a joke. I only managed 27 average with my rental ES250 and 20 with a rental 6, I get mid 20s in my LS

2015 LS460 F Sport Crafted Line RWD owner here. Upgraded from a GS350 and one of the best decisions I've made. Took a 1,000 mile road trip and didn't have a single issue with my back. I am very picky and sensitive when it comes to seating and I found the LS to be extremely comfortable throughout. You really don't feel like you're going 80mph. My passenger slept about 80% of the time and said the seats were very comfortable!

Haven't done any maintenance myself except for oil changes which are simple and straight forward.

High MPG entire trip: 70+mph averaged 26-27mpg. As for city, avg. 14mpg in 25-50mph driving.

I get about 13 mpg. City driving, short trips. Got 23 mpg on a road trip with 4 people and lots of gear. Love the LS (2015 Fsport AWD), but I wouldn't buy it thinking you're going to save money on gas.

I am also looking and trying to learn as much .as possible. I had a mint '04 Black/black LS430 w 78k miles. New Lexus rims and tinted windows.....it was perfect for my daily. A couple of weeks ago I was in an accident and I am pretty sure it will be totaled. Super disappointing. I have looked and don't think I can reproduce that car. So...I am looking at LS460s also. Appreciate all the info. I am looking for rwd non air suspension and clean. Thanks. Bill
