Not sure if this has ever been linked here but I found this today since I was curious how exactly Lexus came up with an 8 speed of the size and parts content they did, it's quite interesting and also explains why it shifts so slow vs a ZF8. This is a fairly long/complex video FYI


There isn't really another trans out there that is like this one, very interesting and it works by effectively creating two input shaft speed "signals" to drive the main 4 speed gearset to get you 4/5/7 by just allowing the front "extra" planetary to rotate providing the modification to the overall speed/ "2nd signal". You get all this with very few parts and light overall weight that actually involves less parts and weight than the 430s transmission with way more overall gearing to say nothing vs other 8 speed options. Very strange. The only drawback I can see is it's weak and slow shifting vs a ZF
