Default 2007 VSC Error After Filling Gas Tank

Yes, gas cap replaced! Twice...2007 Lexus LS460 L Error Codes after filling gas tank – very intermittent during the last 3 years and 10K miles. Reset codes and everything perfect. Using BlueDriver device for the scan and reset. Gas cap replaced with NO change. Gas cap turn 1 click per instructions.

BEFORE – car runs perfectly, and everything works. Code scan indicates 1 Pending Code P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2; 1 Air Conditioner Code B1497 Communication Malfunction.

AFTER filling gas tank I may drive 1 mile or 20 miles and the following codes will display – cruise control inoperative, check engine light on, Check VSC System and more (see photo).

AFTER Scan Report:

1 Confirmed Code P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2

1 Instrument Cluster Code C1641 Powertrain System Failure

1 Electronic Controlled Power Steering Code C1201

1 Advanced Parking Guidance System Code C1641 Powertrain Failure

1 Antilock Brake System Code C1201

1 Air Conditioner Code B1497 Communication Malfunction

1 Engine Code P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2

I would assume some of the codes are ALERTS for the driver. No cruise, steering and brakes wobble, etc.

So, what sensor does the full gas tank trigger? Thanks for the input and ideas.

P0174 is the one that triggers most of others.

Check your alternator is working/charging. There is some kind of a common denominator.

The Evap system is likely to be affected by "topping off" the gas tank when the nozzle handle releases and you keep adding gas. A normal full tank shouldn't trigger any lights or codes.

the fuel pump gaskets could be bad. its also in the same area as the valve cover gaskets so see if there is a leak somewhere around there as well.

Just had a 'House M.D. moment' with music playing in the background. What if it's a weak tank pump (or even clogged tank filters)? Adding more fluid results in more load theoretically. And Lean code. System fuel pressure must be checked asap using correct procedure. "Don't tell Cuddy!"
FYI Lean code sets when LTFT is reaaaalllly ridiculous like +35%.
PS. qtrung909 surely meant HPFPs seals leaking. Those leak oil, not fuel, so no relation to OPs problem (and Lean code, not Rich).

Not guilty - never top off the tank. Bad news for the newer cars if gas gets into the carbon filter or ..... Thanks for the response.

Mass Airflow Sensors CLEANED today - hopefully, this fixes the issue. Thanks for the postings and comments. The LS460 is a Sunday driver which will take me several weeks before the next GAS stop.

If not already adding some type of fuel stabilizer, I would recommend beginning to. Fuel is already a week to two out when finally delivered at stations. And already today's ethanol fuels start the degradation process and begin absorbing moisture. Not saying this is the direct cause of your codes, nevertheless, it may be a good starting point to prevent. While mine is not a "Sunday" driver, I do drive it every two to three days, and sometimes it goes a week to two without being driven while I'm traveling. I add fuel stabilizer and Seafoam to the tank about every other fill-up, depending how long I know the car may sit.

Adding my two cents, I had a bank too lean after running the tank dry. It persisted for about a month and it was both banks. Not my proudest moment.

Coincidently that was also when I got cat codes and those haven't gone away since that fated day. (catalytic converter below efficiency)

FINAL AND ABSOLUTE FIX!!!

Smoke testing done by "local" GM dealer found the culprit. The Emission Evaporative Purge Solenoid Valve was replaced AND the 6" long rubber hose attached to the valve was hardened and allowing a small amount of leakage. Mechanic indicated the probable cause was the hose and the Purge valve may have been ok. I elected to leave the new valve in place and keep the original as spare or souvenir. Total cost: $196...

Now, explain why my Lexus dealer could NOT locate the problem? Oh well, I am happy !!!!!!!!!!! I have just hit 71K miles and still loving the 460L.

Rcboneyard- Thanks for coming back to post your ultimate diagnosis and fix! When I’m digging through the forum for an answer it’s great to see posts with conclusions.

Now, explain why my Lexus dealer could NOT locate the problem?”
It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. That GM tech could have got lucky, but my guess is he is just plain tenacious and smart enough to leverage old school diagnostic techniques when you can’t rely on a computer to tell you what’s wrong.

Great story and result. Glad you got it figured out
