Exclamation 2007 Codes, Codes, and more Codes

2007 LS Base w/171,000k. I am working with my mechanic on addressing the issues.

Current Dash lights: Check Engine, "! triangle", VSC ASF, Traction Control
Mechanic's initial thoughts:
  • Due to the number of codes, it could be the ECM (comm errors). He has reset the codes to see what trips first.
  • O2 Sensor is needed
  • Catalytic is likely needed. Determining which one
  • Need to smoke test the exhaust to verify leaks. Seems louder than normal near the engine (over time)
Car does "burn" oil as is common in the forum. Not chronic. I use Liqui-Moly oil flush and Liqui-Moly high mileage additive. It helps and oil is very clean
Note: Just the other morning, the car was isling "rough", shuttering slightly (Illinois, 75 degrees, cold start). Nothing since.

My questions in advance of diagnosis:
1. Consequences of replacing ECM?
Pro's/Cons of online programmers using VIN
Purchasing "used" on-line
What other programming fallout will occur? Keys, Navigation, Bluetooth, stereo, milelage...heck, every aspect is computerized.

2. Muffler system and Cat
Best place to get replacement?
Brands? Magna-Flow, etc.
I prefer to stay quiet/close to OEM sound profile if I can.
The Cats seem to be located after the manifold, yes? Seems to be one part vs. what Magna-Flow offers
I removed the heat shields. The material was resting on the muffler and rattling.

3.

All Codes which were captured, pre-reset.

First, see what codes come up again. It takes about 100-150 miles of driving typically. No point in guessing without the test results.
You should pull a couple of spark plugs. They could be fouled depending on how much oil it burns, plus they are past due unless changed previously.

FYI you can't _just_ replace ECM with a used one. Firstly it must be exact same part number as one installed in the car (much variety there). Secondly it will need to be coded for your smart key/immobilizer system - requires a dealer or versed locksmith. Ideally eeprom data needs to be transferred too (it contains some extra data apart from VIN).

Thank you, Hence the "fallout" question I suspected that there would be further reaching work and details. For lack of a better term, it sounds like the "configuration" (EPROM, etc.) needs to be saved and transferred. If it is the ECM, my concern is opening Pandora's Box without having a peek inside first. As for the ECM services on-line....are they legit? I am in the tech field and understand the dependency details. Thanks for your opinion.

I personally do not believe the ECM is the problem. Unless Maybe you got a jump start and did not hook up leads properly and possibly can short or surge the ECU/ECM.

GEEZA DUDE if you were to replace original exhaust system with a FULL MagnaFlow replacement and O2 sensors, your looking at least $4k.
If i were you i would run a full tank of Cata Clean. I think one bottle treats 4 gal. Of fuel i would buy 6 bottles. Some walmarts carry Cata Clean for a great price, better then advance auto or autozone. Be prepared to pay close to $200 if you buy from autozone or advance.
