Default Another "Should I change my spark plugs at 60k miles" question

I have a 2017 LS 460, and am up for the 60k service. In reading ClubLexus across the forums, it seems you don't really need to change the plugs at 60k miles, and it's more about emissions compliance. I live in CA if that makes a difference, as I seem to recall some discussion a few years back about CA emissions standards.

I have my service appointment at my local independent mechanic tomorrow, and am not planning on replacing the plugs. Seem right? Just looking for a sanity check. Cheers.

CA compliance is determined by the required smog test every few years. Unless you have any issues like burning oil, I guarantee you that your plugs won't be worn at 60k. I know this because I changed the plugs on my 2013 at 60k and saw that I wasted my money ($120+ for plugs) and time after I removed a few plugs. Another thing to consider is iif your intake manifold/valley plate is leaking oil, it will show in the foam boots at the base of the spark plugs. That can be a pricey job at a garage. It would be unusual for this to be an issue at 60k.

Sanity check is to pull couple easier ones and look. Otherwise 60k is a good time to replace your plugs.

I would do it for sure. Just follow the maintenance schedule as a basis, and I would do several things more frequently...

I just had my plugs changed after 123,000 miles-first time at 70,000 miles. They looked ok but it was due! Can't really tell much of a difference in performance-just as smooth as always.

Thanks everyone. I've decided to get them replaced. My local indy mechanic that I trust should be able to do that just fine.

I'll say that my fellow members have a valid opinion. I do suggest that you get an estimate as two of the plugs take some extra labor to get at. Also, the foam boots around the plugs may need changing at the same time. Might as well clean both MAF sensors(spray) and the throttle body(spray and wipe)while the mechanic has things disassembled.

I change my plugs every 100,000 kilometres and my LS600h has now done 231,000 klms. Just good maintenance to change them out in my view.
My mechanic didn't know how to change them originally given they are "way down" but I found a youtube video on how its done and haven't looked back again....nor's he!

The 60k recommendations is for emissions compliance. Lexus will warranty the emissions compliance if, and only if, you follow their recommendations to the T. Prior to 2007, their recommended plug change interval was 100,000 miles. Nothing changed.

I have 100k on mine and they are fine, with no misfires or codes.

The plugs will likely last past 150k, I would still want to change them at 100k or so. I pulled mine at 136k since I was in doing other stuff and they still looked great

I can vouch for the over 100k on them. My 04 SiennaXLE uses a very similar plug if not the same I don't know.
But I have 120k on them and still runs and performs very well. Those Iridium plugs are just that good.

Welcome to the forum. You make a great point about iridium plugs in general.

I replaced the spark plugs in my 2009 LS460 at 118k miles.
2 out of 8 old spark plugs has ~10% wider gap than new ones
Also cleaned MAF sensor and throttle body.
after this service, was able to achieve 35 mpg during 20 mile cruise on highway at ~ 69 mph, very impressive.
