He'll start the diagnostic next Monday July 3rd 2023.

I'll update once I get further into it.
Here is how someone fixed P0985.

Do you have details regarding the part, whether a part number or what it's called? I'm curious to know what they think the issue is.

Mine didn't have a leak. Given all the codes and fluid being so called "burnt" (82k miles and still original), should I ask them to drain and refill or should I ask them to drop the pan and replace filter and SR Solenoid (code p0985 points to this).

Upon reading Lexus service manual, it points to test ECU first followed by resistance in the solenoid and finally pin/harness. Never a word on replacing the transmission lol.

I've never read a Toyota manual that tells you to test any ecu before other simpler items.

I'd share your experience and reading with the indy shop. But I'd also "ask" about drain, filter and fill as a "try this" before replacing any other parts.

They're likely inferring bad transmission from bad solenoids. I can follow their logic; if the solenoids are bad, then shift pressures will be off. Long-term running in that state could theoretically lead to burnt-out clutch packs and fluid. That's one of the reasons that transmissions go in to limp mode, it's a kind of self-preservation.

That said, from your description of when the problem occurred and for how long, seems a little far-fetched. I agree on fluid replacement, and some actual diagnostics on connectors, solenoids, and other components.

I was talking to a local shop and even they cited, it overly complicated and they don't wanna work on LS460 because of how involved the system is.

If anybody wants the repair manual just pm me. I'll send the copy I have.

I use a indy shop that specializes in Japanese cars. Even if they don't do trans, they can refer you. But they usually will do a drain, fill, filter. That's easy for them.

Oh come on now, the AA80E is a really simple pure electronic control trans. Just check the solenoids, harness, and line pressures and that's really all there is. Not really any adjustable or non-electronic controls to have go wrong on one of these....if the solenoids don't fix it and you don't have an internal leak at an apply servo ETC then you ran out of frictions and it would be cheaper to just swap the trans

Here is my follow-up.

The Transmission shop saw a leak at the fill plug.
Replaced that crush washer, added 2 litres of ATF and test drove.
It is as good as new.

$60.00

My tranny was acting up and going into limp mode. Needed less than a quart. They are pretty picky as to the level!

I have a 2001 GS that developed leaking transmission cooling lines and whenever I took a sharp turn, the exact same symptoms showed up. I'd top off the transmission and the symptoms would go away.

Final update. The warranty company paid for used transmission and labor. My total cost was $1300 for last one month. That includes some diagnostics they won't cover, rental for a month, towing to and fro.

Happy to hear it's resolved. As this trans is rarely a problem, the used trans should be reliable. The last long term rental I had was a BMW hard top convertible. Fun to drive in part because it was such a departure from a luxury sedan.

I got a Tesla Model 3 RWD 2023 from Hertz. I am strongly considering a purchase of it. The interior and ride comfort is nowhere near to ls460, I definitely had the fun. I am only 30 and the LS460 feels like a land yacht after driving the Model 3.

The other repair shop diagnostics was three solenoids and bulkhead harness that goes into transmission with a quote of $900 (parts)+$800 (labor) but the warranty company decided to replace the whole transmission. The labor for tranny replacement was $2400 and other $200 in parts (fluid, filter and gasket). Warrarnty company supplied the transmission. I can feel the glide in transmission, or I am getting used to not having regen while coasting, hahahaha
