I haven't received this error myself so I can't speak from experience, but that code means that one of the VVT camshaft motors (specifically for bank 1) isn't working. That should mean a reduction in power in certain RPM bands, but it's not connected to the transmission directly. The engine ECU should detect that the motor isn't functioning correctly and keep the other bank timed in sync. If things were working poorly enough to affect shifting, I'd think that you'd notice the engine running roughly as well. The FSM states that when code P0010 is saved the ECU goes into a fail-safe mode and does the following:
  • Power to camshaft timing control motor is cut
  • Valve timing of bank that is operating normally is fixed at maximum retard angle
How many miles on the car, and has the ATF ever been changed? If there are no codes related to the transmission I would start with a drain and fill of the ATF, replacing the internal filter at the same time, and resetting the learned shift patterns.
