Smaller gas tank too
LS500 Fuel tank: 18 gal
I've always loved my LS460's 22.2 gal tank (23% larger). Gives a range of over 460 miles. Yes, I know the fuel economy of the LS500 is better and the 500 may eak out a similar or even longer range, but I'm not buying an 80k+ luxury car for fuel economy.
So, the gas tank follows the car's theme of a more cramped interior w/ a larger exterior.
I suppose it's the engineer in me - I've always liked a philosophy that Honda publicized a few years ago
Man Maximum, Machine Minimum. Speaking of Honda, it's hard to figure how they can make a great Accord, but the Acuras are ho-hum
The LS500 hearkens back to the large overhang Cadillac type boats of long ago. Striving for looks, but not hitting the mark for most Americans. Lexus sells in 70 countries, perhaps the look is more popular in countries like China where the market is growing faster.
I'm still going to drive the 500, but I don't have high hopes. On that topic, another post said they "didn't want to waste the salesman's time". After having my LS460 for over 6 yrs, I've spent quite a bit of time at Lexus dealerships for service. The look of boredom on the salesmens faces suggest they would welcome any type of interaction. The avg Lexus dealership sells only 3-4 vehicles/day, so it's not like they are overwhelmed. Once in awhile a salesman will even throw you the keys and let you go alone. That happened to me at a Benz dealership and I was able to do a thorough drive of an S550. Test drives are so much better when you don't have to carry on an inane conversation w/ the salesman while you're driving.

As was posted above I saw a larger fuel capacity figure advertised.
As for dealers only selling 3-4 cars a day, you might be surprised to learn that Lexus dealers are the highest profit per square foot dealers in the Industry. Volume depends on where you are, but the dealers here sell 200-250 cars a month.
Car salespeople are 100% commission. So, if you are monopolizing their time that’s time they could meet a customer who might buy. As a 100% commission salesperson myself I am sensitive to that. I still test drive all kinds of cars that I have no intention of buying, but I’m quick about it, and I’m careful to go when they aren’t busy.

that seems odd. That’s basically the same size fuel tank as the current 4th gen Prius. And from what I understand the gas tank and hybrid battery aren’t sandwiched together underneath the rear seat cushion like it is on the new 2018 Camry hybrid.
