Default 2018 Lexus LS500 vs 2019 Audi A8L

Having driven both cars for days, and having bought the 2019 A8L, I wholeheartedly agree.

When they describe the new A8, it sounds like it resembles old LS models (quiet, smooth, not ostentatious) .

Yes. The main competitor to the 2019 Audi A8L when I purchased the car was in fact the 4LS.

I also agree with those comments having checked both cars and test driven them, but there is one thing that puts me off with the A8 are those high gloss black panels that are covering a large portion of the dashboard and some areas of the doors - they just show off all dust and fingerprints terribly! They also don’t feel that solid.
For me, the LS dashboard definitely wins overall in terms of look and tactic feel!
Currently, there doesn’t seem to be any way to configure an A8 without those horrible glossy panels!

The rear of the A8 reminds me of the 4LS, both very nice and understated.

I actually really like the gloss black panels (when clean) and I LOVE the new MMI. I hate the fingerprints though, and thus will require more TLC.

I would prefer a swivel wheel or whatever, but hey, something about not being able to have it all, sadly.

I seen another comparison and the reviewer said the A8 is the new flagship king. Even better than the S-Class. So that's saying a lot.

I almost feel it's inappropriate for me to comment anymore about anything Lexus since I didn't end up buying the 5LS, but I will anyways.

To me, the 5LS was designed towards my demographic and I decided otherwise, but I'd like to just state the 5LS is geared towards what was the last Audi A8 target audience. Sporty, fun, comfortable. Sure, that isn't what I was going for so i decided against the 5LS, but I do want to state that no matter what car one chooses in this category, we are privileged to be able to afford these cars so keeping that in mind, we're all lucky.

These are public forums, all are welcome (but frankly I'm just waiting to see pics of your A8! )

Also, I appreciate your views as a consumer in this segment and while this may be a Lexus forum, I think it's great to stay informed on what's going on with other automakers. We have a 2015 GS that will need replacing soon and while an LS feels like the next logical step, real accounts like these are very helpful, so thank you for sharing and keeping us informed.

I am a long time Lexus owner (LS430 followed by LS460, wife GS430 followed by ES350). Went to the San Diego car show today and was very impressed by the 2019 Audi A6, A7, A8 MMI system. Started looking for a replacement for my 2010 AWD LS460 (I don’t have enough good words to describe my satisfaction with the car) but cannot get over the new Lexus media/nav control system. It’s fair to say that had Lexus used a system anywhere close to the Audi MMI (with touch controls), I would have purchased the new LS500 by now.

If you are looking for the ride of the LS, and you are in the US which is a safe assumption I think, you will have to knock the A6 off of your list. Unlike here in Canada where one can fit air suspension on the A6, this is not an option in the US. You'd have to buy the A8. (I have no clue about the A7, but my concern with the A7 is the window frame less design which causes more wind noise.

If a plush ride and an astonishingly quiet interior (same level of quietness as a S class) is what you're going for, go for the A8. The engine/MHEV system and all of that are the same in the A6/A7/A8 so from a reliability standpoint, it should be alright, although obviously Lexus should still win in this department.
