then you would have realized that with a decent bit of customization (and buying an aussie bellhousing or adapter plate) that it CAN be done.
from what i understand, there has never been a 1UZ LS400 with a manual conversion or not, done inside the USA.

Ah!!!!
I know a few things about these kind of conversions.
When I was 18, I owned an 88 Lincoln Mark VII LSC. Loved the car for its style, luxury and the 5.0 Mustang V8 that came with it.
It didnt take long for me to start working on that car to make it faster, and at some point I converted from factory 4-speed AOD to 5-speed manual from a Mustang of the same era. I raced that car with a built motor and went from stock 15.9 to 13.9 at 100mph with just the tranny swap and a motor with race heads and cam and some more little parts here and there.
I did the same thing to my 90 LSC with all the parts I had left over from the 88 LSC.
Thing is, LSC was built on the Fox chasis shared with the Mustang so most of the parts were easy to find, like the pedals, flywheel, clutch, fork, shifter, bellhousing, tranny mount. I did have to get the drive shaft lengthened.
Now I am all for being all unique and different and standing out from the crowd. But let me tell you something. Lexus and Lincoln have one thing they share, the soft ride. And trust me, nothing suck more than a soft, large, heavy car with a manual tranny.
So unless you plan to upgrade the suspension to european (BMW) standards, I am confident in saying that a manual shifting LS400 will not be that much fun, or that much faster. I own a 98 LS with 290 hp, vvvti, and 5-speed auto. I cannt imagine the car being any fun with a manual 5 speed or 6-speed for that matter.
If I dont make any sense, just go test drive a 98-up BMW 540 6-speed and all your problems will be solved.

while the soft ride is a common feature of both the Lexus and the lincoln, the mod-ability ends there, your SBF had CATALOGS of parts available and ford made SEVERAL manual transmissions for it at the time.
Lexus/Toyota never made a manual trans that would bolt onto the 1uz range of V8s. and only recently have aftermarket parts started becoming available (primarily from overseas.)
also, the line on manually shifting a stock LS is kinda off too, i agree, on an LS with blown shocks thats bouncy as hell yea, it would feel like crap, but an OEM suspensioned LS is soft but still a hell of a lot more responsive than something from either lincoln and/or cadillac of the same class/era.
