broken vvti pulley results in timing belt failure / bent valves

Here's an update,
My mechanic found an engine from a wrecked '99 LS400 with 81K on it. He is going to pull my engine (which has 111K on it) and drop in the other. It's going to be pricey (low to mid $4,000) but it should work out. Guess I'm going to have to keep this for a few more years to amortize the cost!
I'll follow up in a couple of weeks and let you all know how it works out.

while the motor is out have him do the timing belt, water pump, cam seals, and etc... since its all due at 90k mi. anyways.

I am dying to know, did you get the belt changed at a dealer? I called my guy at Nalley Lexus, and he said if that happened, they'd eat it, since they did the timing belt service, but he also said it has never happened in his memory.
If you did get the belt changed at a dealer, I'd put up a STRONG fight.

Hi,
I got the timing belt changed 2 1/2 years ago at the same independant mechanic. However, the timing belt itself did not fail. It was the breaking of the cam (vvti) pulley which caused the problem which I assume caused the timing belt to lose tension and fail. I don't think I can fault anyone here. It seems like just a freak occurance.
