Now back on track of the threar minus the hijack.


I replaced the filter in about 15 minutes including pan install and replacing the T-IV that was lost with dropping the pan. The trans is back to normal shifting fine and completely silent. It was blocked causing restricted flow to the pump causing it to cavitate and cause the whirring noise like an empty power steering pump makes. I feel that in my particular car this is mostly caused by the fact that the magnets are missing. Most of the debris clogging the screen should have been stuck to the magnets. I'll be ordering magnets soon and replacing them in the trans and will be done with the transmission for a while. Don't assume your transmission is bad when it starts making noises or shifting weird. Don't assume you need to drop some coin on a new trans. If you would have taken my car to several shops the answers would range from "you just neede a new filter" to you either need a new transmission or complete rebuild, when can we start?"

I would replace all the fluid once you put the magnet on not just the 2 quarts. Here is the link on how to do it.

You aren't kidding. It's shifting like new after the filter change. I did a full flush through the cooler lines maybe 20k ago so it's still pretty fresh. I hear what you're saying about flushing with suspended metal in the fluid since the magnets are not installed. I'm going to order the magnets today and replace them when I'm off again next week.

I think I would still flush it. Whats 45 bucks for the peace of mind

I am glad you found the problem and that you followed up. I did not realize that the filter could become clogged easily--I had heard from others that even at 100k miles, the filter looked completely clean, and that some people even recommended NOT dropping the pan because it was unnecessary in most cases (and would just result in having to buy a new oil pan gasket or doing a FIPG, which is messy as hell). Congrats!

I put a trans cooler on my 91 ls 400 and i pump 4 quatrs of fluid from the cooler into a bottle and then i replace the hose clamp it and then i fill 4 quarts of mobil one trans fluid my trans shifts like it has a shift kit i drop the pan every 60 ,000 and look for dirt and metal shavings and so far nothing. My 1986 cressida the for runner of the lexus has 429,000 on the same trans i also pumped the trans thru the trans cooler and filled it again with mobil one trans fluid the car probably has close to 550,000 miles now and siill going keep changing the trans fluid and power steering fluid and i use mobile one in the power steering and no leaks so far at 237,000 miles you can also use type 4 trans fluid in the trans and ps

there are very few fluids approved for use in place of Toyota T-IV. Mobil1 Synthetic Transmission fluid, Amsoil, and i believe Royal Purple are the only companies making T-IV compatible fluid.

I am having the same problem I was having.Even with this junk yard tranny I am still back to square one.This makes me believ the problem is the type orf fluid my shop is using and it needs a type t-4 and a drain and not a flush plus the strainer change.
Is there anywhere on the net to do this for a 95-97 tranny.Lexusls.com is for the 1gen tranny service.

the flush/change procedures are relatively the same between the 1st and early 2nd gens, the drain plugs iirc are in the same place.

I never took the filter change issue seriously until now. I put a junkyard transmission on my car (just because) and it stopped after about 1/4 of a mile. I had it towed home and dropped the pan. Lo and behold, the brand new filter and pan were CHOCK FULL of metallic particles and junk. I threw an old filter on there - that was not completely clogged, and the car moves again. Not for long, probably, but there's a moral to this story;
change the transmission filter regularly!

And even better: Filter's go for $35. The trans is fine! Talk about a possible huge waste of money!
