radar detectors
Views on radar dteertors from out LS crowd? I just bought a 04 430 and want to use it!! I assume you still have to have eyes in the back of your head, ready to stomp the brake and be sensible about not speeding around turns, on open straightaways when you are the only car and such?
I have the gps 9500I from escort and have 5 days to try.
Can you really beat a radar impulse? Warm

Great! Do you guys just drive with reckless abandon, or is there an art to using a detector to be extra safe? The beam is so fast how do you keep beating radar?

Laser and radar are 2 different things.
Radar has scatter and can be "sniffed" miles prior, if it is being used.
Laser, well, its always too late.
Instant on Radar makes it trickier, there a cop can sit for minutes before instantly turning on his radar gun, this prevents early scatter detection.
Final word, let someone else lead the pack and stay several car lengths behind, cops usually track down the alpha male of the pack.
As for reckless abandon, well that is all Americans. There is no exhaustive training for drivers in the states, Senior citizens never need to retest, soccer moms don't need to be able to see over the steering wheels of their SUVs. Come on reckless abandon! Its everywhere, texting, calling, sipping coffee, smoking, eating while driving.......

Need some help on radar detectors
I'm new to the LS and Lexus, having been a Q-45 man for many years and then shifting over to Volvo. I picked up a 2005 LS430 a few months ago at the height of the gas mileage frenzy with less than 15,000 miles and a clear car-fax report. To say I am delighted is an understatement!
I admit to having been a 'dumbass' driver in my earlier days including racing through the Ozarks and totally maxing out my Q45 over FL highways at night for over 60 miles (150 mph was fun). I have since grown older and boring and try to keep it within 10 mph of the speed limit. My problem is that the LS is a quiet beast and runs away when you are not watching it. I've been stopped twice in the last two weeks for being 17 & 21 MPH over the speed limit. I managed to get two warnings since the incidents occurred in two different counties.
It's time for me to take preemptive action and install a good radar/lazar detector. I want it to appear to be factory installed. Suggestions would be appreciated. I would also like to install the new 'always remain stopped' option available of the 460, if possible. Again, suggestions?

13 years behind the wheel now, 3 speeding tickets, and one Speed Contest (racing).
I pretty much always drive 80 in a 65. The tips/rules I use myself are of course to alway have my eyes open and be consistent with looking. I slow down near on ramps as the CHP love to hang out on them. They also like to hide in the shadows of underpasses. I do my best to always stay at 80 or below. Don't be the lead car, or the last car (lazy CHP pick of the last car, other make a point to others by pulling over the car in the front of the pack). If you do get pulled over, be very kind, turn on interior lights if it's dark out, keep hands on steering wheel and have passengers place hands on knees. don't admit to speeding in anyway, but also don't try to deny it (you figure out the best way to do it on your own because i just kinda wing it when it happens)

Don't know if it is still available, but there is a company that made a radar detector that installs in the grill and another somewhere in the rear of the car. The controller for it sits on the steering wheel. It was nearly $700 and tests showed it was way worse than the Escort was even then. The Escort has improved a lot over the years, btw. There is a web site (or more) dedicated just to radar detectors and preventing cops from catching you in a speed trap and lying about your speeding (yes, it does still happen.) Crooks everywhere; that's why I have a radar/laser detector.
I have found my self over 100 in the new to me LS and I was just in a simple pass! My 3000 VR-4 is even faster than the LS but you can tell how fast your are easily in that car. (It's for sale, btw.)
Best thing is to do your research for a gadget like this.

Did my homework as suggested and wound up getting the Passport 9500ix. The 'built-in' one that could come close to matching it was $1200 more installed. I'll have this one hard wired today. Thanks all.
